HBO just picked up a brand-new half-hour animated series with a two-season order.
The premium cable network has aired epic series like Game of Thrones and The Sopranos but isn't known for its original animated shows, though there have been some over the years, like Todd McFarlane's Spawn, The Ricky Gervais Show and The Life & Times of Tim. Original animated content, such as Harley Quinn and Creature Commandos, are usually relegated to HBO Max.
Animation is about to make a return to HBO proper, though, now that the network has announced a new series called Merrick & Treves, which is being created by Adam Reed, Casey Willis and Lucky Yates, the team behind Archer. The show, a mix between Rick & Morty and Kingsman, takes place at Queen Victoria's top-secret Royal Temporal Constabulary, with the heroes traveling through time to try to stop Jack the Ripper. HBO is doubling down on Merrick & Treves by giving it a two-season order right up front.
