The Last Of Us Part 3 Officially Teased

Known as 'Cyberpunk 2077's' biggest fan, Angharad is a Welsh games writer who thrives in anything related to digital storytelling. If a video game explores the intricacies and horrors of womanhood, she is there.

Thanks to previous work at GAMINGbible, GameByte, The Loadout, Game Luster, Angharad has built a strong understanding of both the digital world and what fans want from it and is eager to share her thoughts and expertise with readers.

Whilst we know that a third season of HBO's The Last of Us is currently in production, the same cannot be said for the award-winning video game franchise that inspired it. It has now been well over a decade since the first entry, The Last of Us, launched back in 2013, and more recently, fans were treated to the aptly-named sequel, The Last of Us Part II in 2020.

However, since then, a potential third installment has been something of a mythical beast, as it has only been mentioned in passing, and never really received an official sighting, or announcement/confirmation in this case. Not only that, but with Naughty Dog head and The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann giving mixed signals when asked about The Last of Us Part III, it is no wonder that fans have been left confused.

However, with many of us choosing to believe that a lack of direct denial does mean that there is hope, it seems as though the positivity may have paid off.

Back on 26 September, which is the day that fans refer to as 'The Last of Us Day' or 'Outbreak Day', Druckmann released a blog post talking all about the franchise, and how far it has come since it first launched back in 2013. Now with two entries under its belt, as well as an award-winning television adaptation, it is safe to say that its popularity has far from dwindled, and Druckmann took the time to thank fans on behalf of Naughty Dog.

"Another The Last of Us Day has come and gone!" He wrote. "Once again, we’re moved by the love and passion you continue to show for this world and its characters. After all these years, seeing how much these stories still mean to so many of you continues to warm our hearts."

The director then went on to address two of the most frequently asked questions he gets. The latter refers to when we will receive more news about Naughty Dog's upcoming IP, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, but the first was: "Will there or won’t there be more stories in The Last of Us?"

To which Druckmann replied, "Since Grounded II, we’ve talked about the possibility of telling more stories in the world of The Last of Us.

We have a couple of very exciting new projects in very early stages – so we can’t say much about them at this point. I will tell you that both projects will expand the canon of The Last of Us beyond Part I and Part II.

"The world of The Last of Us means a great deal to us, and we wouldn’t return to it unless we had something meaningful to say. We believe these stories are worth telling."

So, there you have it, the most confirmation we have ever received regarding The Last of Us Part III, or at least further projects that will expand the universe in some capacity. Of course, this is still not an official announcement, but it definitely seems as though our hope was not in vain.
