Indonesia's BNN finds illicit substances in 1,716 e-liquid samples

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's National Narcotics Agency (BNN) has found that 1,716 of 1,745 tested e-cigarette liquid samples contained narcotics or new psychoactive substances (NPS), the agency said.
BNN Chief Gen. Suyudi Ario Seto said in a press statement confirmed here Thursday that the findings highlighted a crucial issue requiring urgent attention in national efforts to eradicate drugs.
Suyudi presented the data during a meeting with Government Communications Agency (Bakom RI) Head Muhammad Qodari at BNN headquarters in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 29.
Based on testing conducted by BNN's Narcotics Laboratory Center through August 12, 2026, 1,716 of 1,745 e-liquid samples contained narcotics or NPS.
Of the samples examined, 1,552, or 88.9 percent, contained etomidate, according to laboratory results.
During the meeting, Suyudi called for stronger inter-agency collaboration to expand public messaging against narcotics.
"We hope the Government Communications Agency can work closely with us to disseminate anti-narcotics messages while building concrete cooperation," Suyudi said.
He reiterated President Prabowo Subianto's instruction on International Day Against Drug Abuse that state institutions must not leave BNN to fight narcotics alone.
"Strengthening cross-sector synergy is a vital step in addressing the threat of narcotics," he said.
Suyudi outlined several BNN initiatives, including child-focused anti-drug campaigns, anti-narcotics curriculum integration, mobile rehabilitation, online tele-rehabilitation, and the 184 hotline.
Meanwhile, Bakom RI Head Muhammad Qodari committed to bringing the drug issues raised by BNN into higher-level discussions.
Qodari pledged to push for the war on drugs to become a priority on President Prabowo's agenda.
Bakom RI will hold internal discussions to finalize cooperation with BNN and pursue concrete follow-up actions, Qodari added.
