Def Leppard’s Phil Collen Praises Mexico’s The Warning While Calling Out Sexism in Rock

Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen has praised Mexican sister trio The Warning for their success in a rock scene he says is still very much male-dominated.

Speaking with Mexican outlet Sopitas, Collen recalled The Warning opening for Def Leppard in Mexico in 2017, when sisters Daniela, Paulina, and Alejandra Villarreal were still teenagers. “They were great,” he said. “And they were so young, a three-girl band. It was incredible.”

The guitarist went on to address the challenges facing women in rock, explaining why he finds The Warning’s growing success particularly encouraging. “I think there’s a very macho and sexist attitude toward women in rock music,” Collen said. “So when someone like them succeeds, I love it.”

He added: “With The Warning, all my best wishes, all the love I can give them, everything. It’s great. It really inspires me to hear that they’re doing so well.”

His remarks echo concerns The Warning themselves recently raised about the industry’s treatment of female musicians. The Villarreal sisters told CNN en Español earlier this month that although opportunities for women in rock have improved during their 13 years together, proving they belong remains a “constant battle.”

“We aren’t always given the same opportunities as women in this genre,” the band said, adding that their success has helped demonstrate that “rock is a genre for women.”

The trio are now preparing for their first-ever headlining stadium concert at Mexico City’s Estadio GNP Seguros on February 5th, 2027. The show will launch their “Everything’s Falling World Tour,” which will take them across Europe, the UK, the United States, and Canada through May.

Meanwhile, Def Leppard have their own busy year ahead. The band recently announced a 45-date North American tour with Goo Goo Dolls and The Struts, kicking off March 2nd in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and wrapping up July 2nd in Indianapolis, Indiana.  Look for deals and get tickets to sold-out shows here (where fans can save $20 on their first order of $200 or more with promo code CONSEQUENCE20 at checkout).
