Tun M admitted to IJN for routine treatment, in stable condition [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) yesterday for routine treatment and is in stable condition.

His press secretary Sufi Yusoff said Dr Mahathir was fatigued and had not been getting enough rest following the death of his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, on Monday.

"He is exhausted from the emotional ups and downs, the hot weather and a lack of rest. All of that is not a good combination for someone who is 101 years old," he said when contacted.

Dr Mahathir was earlier reported to have been admitted to IJN today.

Dr Siti Hasmah died at IJN at age 100. She is survived by seven children.

She was laid to rest at Putrajaya National Cemetery, Presint 20, with honours accorded under the State Funeral Ceremony for national dignitaries.

Dr Siti Hasmah was among the earliest Malay women to qualify as a medical doctor before devoting much of her career to the country's public health service.

Born in Kampung Jawa, Klang, Selangor, in 1926, she studied medicine at the King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore on a government scholarship and was the only Malay woman in her cohort. It was there that she met Dr Mahathir, before the couple married in 1956.

Beyond her role as Dr Mahathir's wife, she was known for her contributions to maternal and child health, as well as broader community wellbeing.
