Glee reboot gets major update from creator Ryan Murphy – and whether it will involve original cast members

Glee creator Ryan Murphy has given fans of the musical comedy drama series the strongest hint yet that a reboot is on its way.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Murphy said that he had "just finished" a Glee reboot script, and spoke about the original cast's reactions.

“I just finished the script an hour ago,” he said. “So, we have a script. Brad [Falchuk], Ian [Brennan] and I, who wrote all the first two seasons, have written something. I’ve been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members. It’s very sweet, and they all had a lot of questions, but they all were very enthusiastic about the idea.”

“Nobody’s read it, so I don’t know, we’ll see," he added. "I vowed to myself that I wanted to write a couple of them to see what people think, particularly the cast, cause we were very close when we were making it.”

Glee launched in 2009 and ran for six seasons. It followed the members of the New Directions glee club at fictional William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio, and was created by American Horror Story's Murphy, alongside Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan.

During the show's run, it won six Emmys and four Golden Globes, and albums featuring the cast's glee club performances sold more than 11 million copies by 2011.

Famously, the Glee cast's cover version of Journey's classic song Don't Stop Believin' managed to outsell the original, and it is the most popular recording from the show, having sold more than 1.4 million copies in the US alone.

The series began as Spanish teacher Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) took over the school's glee club and got to know the pupils who made up New Directions, including ambitious performer Rachel Berry (Lea Michele), quarterback Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith), Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale), Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer), Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley) and cheerleader Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron).

As well as the regular cast, which also included Only Murders in the Building star Jane Lynch as scheming cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester, Glee boasted an impressive list of guest stars including Idina Menzel, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Goldblum, Britney Spears, Carol Burnett, John Stamos, Kate Hudson, Olivia Newton John, Whoopi Goldberg, Josh Groban and Sarah Jessica Parker.

How the reboot will work, and whether any of the original cast members will return, is as yet unknown. However, Murphy previously teased some ideas he had for a reboot on a 2022 podcast hosted by former Glee stars Kevin McHale and Jenna Ushkowitz (who played Tina Cohen-Chang), as reported by IndieWire.

“I’m at the phase now with that show, you know, where it’s like, well, there’s been enough time. Like, maybe we should really re-examine it as a brand,” he said.

“You know, should we do a reboot of it in some way? Should we do a Broadway musical of it in some way?”

“Like, it’s sort of like an interesting legacy that I’m interested in doing in a positive way after sort of pausing for a while. But I don’t know. I just love what it says and what it did.

"And there will never be in my life another Glee, anything close to it, in terms of me feeling so close to it.”
