‘Dead Poets Society’ set the bar for famed actor Ethan Hawke, who played one of the leading roles in the film along with Robin Williams, Robert SeanLeonard, Josh Charles, and many others. Ethan Hawke says that he did not have a good set experience after ‘Dead Poets Society’ for 10 years

The actor recently opened up about working on the sets of ‘Dead Poets Society’ while he was moderating a book talk for Kyle MacLachlan's new memoir, ‘Fictional Selves.’ During the event, while talking about his relationship with MacLachlan, Hawke shared that for years after his breakout role, he believed that this “is what making a movie was like”; however, he was hit with a major reality check. While he did book a lot of gigs following his massive success with ‘Dead Poets Society,' nothing else ever matched the experience behind the scenes, at least not for 10 years after the film was released. He talked about the same and shared, “And that for me was the hard part of growing up, which I feel for you when I read [Fictional Selves]. What happens is when you have these beautiful experiences... I had a great experience with Peter Weir, and then I went 10 years without having a great experience.”Hawke also added, “I thought Dead Poets Society was what making a movie was like. It’s not what it’s like. A lot of people are really cold and crass and mean, and they really want to sell something, and they want to manipulate you, and they don’t respect actors.”

Plot of ‘Dead Poets Society’

The 1989 film is set around Welton Academy, a strict boarding school. The coming-of-age drama directed by Peter Weir specifically revolves around the unorthodox teacher Mr. Keating, who inspires his students to look beyond what is taught and draw inspiration from the arts and poetry, which prompts the students of the all-boys school to restart the ‘Dead Poets Society’ club in secret.
