New Power Rangers Image Brings Back 90s Zords With Jaw-Dropping Redesign

The Zords from the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series are about to return, as Power Rangers reimagines them in a bizarre new form.
Debuting in 1993, the original Dinozords instantly captured the imagination of every 90s kid, equipping each of the Rangers with a towering mech packed with sci-fi weaponry. Famously, the Dinozord footage was reused from Japanese show Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger, limiting what Power Rangers could do with them.
Now, thanks to a massive audience and a change in medium, Power Rangers has far more latitude in reimagining these iconic machines. And what Power Rangers is doing with them is truly weird, even as the franchise has earned its fans' benefit of the doubt...
The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Take The Forms Of Their 90s Zords
Upcoming issues of BOOM! Studios' Mighty Morphin Power Rangers will seemingly transform each Power Ranger into the biological animal that inspired their Zord. The transformation can be seen in connecting covers by Phillip Sevy, showing each Ranger alongside their new animal form.
Previously, it seemed that the Zords might simply be granted life, but a newly shared summary for issue 7 has revealed this unique twist, strongly implying it's the Rangers themselves who will become dinosaurs, prehistoric beasts and dragons.
Trini is Sabertooth Tired of this!
In the second half of this monstrous two-parter, the Power Rangers are trapped in their Zord forms!
Unable to turn back into humans, the team is left helpless as Rita’s latest monster goes on a rampage... the Trauma Dumpster releases its humiliating truth bombs that make you tell your darkest secrets!
But Tommy has an idea why the Rangers are stuck in these forms... and even better, how to switch back! Can he reach them in time to defeat Rita and her Trauma Dumpster before everything becomes a tyrannosaurus wreck?
The issue, coming from Marguerite Bennett and Phillip Sevy, will continue the new series' exploration of psychological issues, depicting the original Rangers as adults, grappling with monsters who represent their regrets and traumas. That will become very literal as Rita Repulsa unleashes the "Trauma Dumpster."
While issue 6 will depict Jason worrying that's no longer the right leader for the team, the latest villain will seemingly transform the Rangers in the meantime, perhaps via the monster's weaponized "Truth Bombs."
Power Rangers' Original Zords Explained
Introduced in the first series of the 90s show, the Zords were the Power Rangers' ultimate weapons - gigantic mechs which they could directly pilot, unleashing slashing claws, electrical blasts and explosive hidden cannons.
Yelling "We Need Dinozord Power, Now!" the Ranger would trigger a lengthy, frequently reused sequence where the Zords emerged from various hidden locales, running to their owners' aid. When the Zords weren't enough, they could be combined into the bipedal Dino Megazord, piloted by the combined efforts of the team.

Later series upgraded (and eventually destroyed) the Dinozords, but no Zords since have quite captured the iconic status of the originals.
Power Rangers Has Given The Dragonzord A New Role
The iconic nature of the original Zords has seen them reimagined in a variety of ways, most recently in Pallie Paul Allor and Gustaffo Vargas' Power Rangers Green. The series follows an older Tommy Olvier in exile and retirement, with the shattered Dragonzord acting as his home, now named "the Dragon's Grave."
Now, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is going even further, trapping the show's 90s heroes in the forms of their classic Zords - bring on dragon Tommy Oliver!
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #6 is coming November 25, followed by #7 December 30.
