Indonesia joins global coalition to protect children in AI era

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia has formally joined the Global Coalition for Children's Rights and Protection in the Age of AI, reinforcing its international commitment to safeguarding young people against digital harms posed by rapidly evolving artificial intelligence.

Speaking at a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday (October 7), Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid announced Indonesia’s participation following high-level discussions held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

"During the UN session, Indonesia participated and joined the Global Coalition for Children's Rights and Protection in the Age of AI," Meutya stated, adding that Jakarta will attend a follow-up summit in November 2026 to help shape international guidelines.

Through the initiative, Indonesia is advocating for standardized international rules to create a unified framework for child safety across digital environments.

”While countries currently may have varying regulations, we hope that in the future, there will be a common global reference point for child protection in the AI era," she explained, noting that a unified standard would enhance regulatory compliance among global tech firms and AI developers.

Meutya attended the coalition's forum, titled "Protecting Children's Rights Facing Artificial Intelligence: The Coalition for Children's Rights and Protection in the Age of AI as an Operational Tool," in New York on September 22.

Co-led by French President Emmanuel Macron, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Kenyan President William Ruto and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, the meeting gathered heads of state, UN leaders, technology companies and child safety experts to formulate concrete safeguards.

While acknowledging that AI presents significant educational and creative benefits for youth, Meutya emphasized that safety measures require multi-stakeholder collaboration.

"We cannot entrust children's safety to algorithms. Governments, technology platforms, the industry, parents, schools and the international community must each assume their respective responsibilities," she concluded.
