Why Prime Video's 4-Hour Zombie Series Has Become A Bona Fide Streaming Hit

Translate

Zach Moser has been writing for ScreenRant since 2022, covering movies, classic TV, and streaming TV. His areas of expertise cover a wide range of genres with a particular interest in horror and drama, and the conversations around the TV and film industry. When he's not covering the latest film releases or chronicling the latest season of a new show, he's writing humor pieces for McSweeney's Internet Tendency, Slackjaw, and Points In Case or working on short stories and his second novel.

There's a new hit series on Amazon Prime Video, a four-hour zombie TV show with a lot going for it. Prime Video isn't scrambling for hits at the moment, with Reacher, Neagley, and The Terminal List, but the streamer has no doubt fallen a level in terms of popularity ever since The Boys finished.

While Prime has found a steady stream of successes in the action drama category, it's clearly not limiting itself to just one genre. Fallout, Young Sherlock, and The Rings of Power represent the wider breadth of styles the streamer is funding. It's even made some inroads in the horror genre.

I Would Rather Die is a recent Prime Video series, a Spanish-language horror comedy that debuted on October 1, 2026, with eight 30-minute episodes. The series is set in the quiet town of Mendoza, where a young man named Archie (Diego Bernal) is bitten by a zombie.

Instead of turning into a brain-dead monster, Archie's transformation is slow, and seemingly allows him to switch from human to zombie at will. Archie decides to figure out what's happening to him before it's too late and he is overcome by his zombie urges.

The series is currently ranking high on the streaming charts, settling within the top 5 shows for Mexico in consecutive days, and breaching the U.S. top 10 since October 5 (via FlixPatrol). Viewers seem to be getting excited about I Would Rather Die, and its success may mean another season could be on the table.

I Would Rather Die's Combination Of Teen Romantic Comedy And Horror Works Well

I Would Rather Die operates in a tone that other zombie shows have utilized to great success. Santa Clarita Diet and iZombie both took the inherent silliness of the zombie idea, and mined it for jokes as well as scares. I Would Rather Die does that same thing, injecting a teen romance into the storyline as well.

Chris' unrequited love for his friend Brenda (Farah Justiniani) has shades of Bear and Nikki in Obsession, though Archie is actually a nice guy rather than a pretend one. This balance of mystery, romance, and zombie horror makes for a unique and fun storyline that flies by thanks to the show's excellent pacing.

There Is A Lot To Unpack In I Would Rather Die

There are a lot of ideas jam-packed into I Would Rather Die. There's the mystery of how Archie got bit and why his transformation is so slow; there's the budding romance between Archie and Brenda; there's a military storyline as the zombie threat grows larger; there's family drama, and more.

All these competing themes and ideas can sometimes feel overwhelming, but it also makes I Would Rather Die feel like a show that the creator, Sebastian Sarinana, was just dying to make. Sebastian's excitement for his story is palpable, and it makes binge-watching the series all the more enjoyable.

I Would Rather Die Joins A Long Line Of Great Non-American Zombie Productions

A man covered in blood in the Korean Movie Train To Busan.

I Would Rather Die is another in a long line of foreign zombie productions that knock it out of the park. Though the genre was popularized in America with George A. Romero, in recent years, directors and creative teams from outside the United States have taken the baton when it comes to zombies.

Train to Busan and Cargo come to us from South Korea and Australia, respectively. On television, All of Us Are Dead and Kingdom are hugely popular and both products of South Korea. I Would Rather Die is continuing that trend, and Prime Video is benefiting.
