Did Cam Skattebo’s Breakout Overtime Moment Leave The New York Giants With A Bigger Worry?

Cam Skattebo had a Sunday that went from forgotten to unforgettable. A week after he did not touch the ball against the New Orleans Saints, the New York Giants running back carried it 17 times for 124 yards and a touchdown in Houston. His 42-yard burst in overtime helped seal a 27-21 win over the Houston Texans and moved the Giants to 4-2-1. Then he went down near the 30-yard line. The win felt huge, but the questions were bigger. Now a hamstring, a flag and a bye week all hang over his breakout night.

Cam Skattebo Felt Something In His Hamstring, And The New York Giants Now Wait

Cam Skattebo said he felt something in his hamstring on that overtime run. He also said he did not slide on purpose. Giants beat reporter Art Stapleton watched it unfold and posted on X: "Cam Skattebo just broke a long run in overtime and dropped at the 30-yard line. Looks like he may have pulled a hamstring."

Nobody has shared a diagnosis or a return date. Skattebo's teammate Tyrone Tracy Jr. also dealt with a hamstring issue in Houston, though he came back in the second half.

Cam Skattebo on penalty: "The NFL loves to post me when I do stuff like that but then also wants to take stuff from me. I'm going to run the ball like I want to run the ball. If I'm going to continue to get flags for it or fined for it, guess I'm going to play for free." #giants https://t.co/JuPy5Ll8Sn

New York gets a bye week before facing the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 9. That gap may be the best medicine either back could ask for.

Cam Skattebo Says He Will Play For Free Before Changing How He Runs

Skattebo was in a sour mood about one more thing. Officials flagged him for unnecessary roughness in the first quarter after he lowered his helmet at the end of a 7-yard run. The league had already fined him $7,073 for the same act after the Week 3 win over the Tennessee Titans.

He did not soften his words afterward. "I'm going to run the ball like I want to run the ball. And if I'm going to continue to get flagged for it or fined for it, man, I guess I'm going to play for free."

He kept going. "I'm going to do what I can to be on this team, to give everything I've got. And if they're going to punish me for that, then I'm just going to keep doing it and keep playing hard."

Right guard Francis Mauigoa took his side. "[Skattebo] was pissed off when he got the personal foul," he told NJ.com. "It's football. Play football. We're not playing patty-cake."

The Giants ran for 180 yards and three touchdowns as a group, so the offense had plenty to feel good about. The Eagles come next, and they will play without quarterback Jalen Hurts for the rest of the season.
