The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has prescribed financial assistance ceilings of up to Rs. 50 crore for hosting certain international sporting events in India under its Scheme of Assistance to National Sports Federations (NSFs).

The guidelines provide for assistance on a per-tournament basis, subject to eligibility criteria, the overall allocation under the approved Annual Calendar for Training and Competition (ACTC), and the scale of the event.

For senior World Championships in Olympic sports, the maximum assistance is Rs. 50 crore where India has won medals or finished among the top 10 in individual or team events at the Olympics or World Championships, provided the competition meets the prescribed participation thresholds. These include more than 50 participating countries and over 500 athletes in individual events, or more than 12 countries and over 200 athletes in team events.

The ceiling is Rs. 20 crore for World Championships in Olympic sports where India has won medals or finished among the top 16 at the Olympics or World Championships, subject to the applicable participation criteria. The maximum assistance is Rs. 10 crore for competitions in Olympic sports where India has qualified for the Olympics, under the lower participation thresholds specified in the guidelines.

The scheme also provides support for indigenous and traditional sports. The maximum assistance for World Championships in these disciplines is Rs. 20 crore for events meeting the higher participation thresholds and Rs. 10 crore for those meeting the lower thresholds.

For Asian Championships and similar events in Olympic sports where India has won medals at the Asian Games, the maximum assistance is Rs. 20 crore for competitions meeting the higher participation thresholds and Rs. 5 crore for those meeting the lower thresholds. For Olympic sports in which India has participated at the Asian Games, the ceiling is Rs. 2 crore under the applicable lower participation criteria.

Asian Championships and similar events in indigenous and traditional sports are eligible for maximum assistance of Rs. 5 crore for competitions meeting the higher participation thresholds and Rs. 3 crore for those meeting the lower thresholds.

The guidelines allow assistance to cover a range of event-related expenses, including boarding, lodging and transportation, venue rental, consumable equipment, medals and awards, prize money, remuneration and travel for technical officials, competition sanction fees, uniforms, doping tests, event insurance, electricity, accessibility audits and accessible transportation.

The Ministry’s guidelines state that a committee will assess the requirements of each proposal and recommend assistance within the prescribed ceilings. The admissible amount may be released directly to organising agencies or vendors in circumstances where grants cannot be released directly to the NSF. Hosting or competition sanction fees may also be paid directly to the concerned international federation, subject to the prescribed conditions.
