Coronation Street's Samia Longchambon thought she should quit soap after online trolling

Coronation Street star Samia Longchambon has opened up about a time she considered leaving the soap after receiving online abuse. During an appearance on Loose Women alongside Katie Piper, in which the latter discussed being trolled over her appearance, the Corrie star shared that she too had been on the receiving end of online abuse.

"I have had it in other ways," she told Piper about feeling embarrassed about nasty comments online.

"I've read comments... when people say, 'Oh, just don't read them', but it's like picking a scab, you know you shouldn't do it, but you just can't help it," the Corrie star said.

"And I've read it and it's just crushed me to the point where I am like, 'Well, I should just quit my job' or 'I should just not have my husband 'cause, clearly, I'm punching,'" she recalled thinking.

Longchambon then explained that reading vile comments made her not just "embarrassed", but also paranoid. "I'm embarrassed that that is on a public forum where people I know can read it about me," Longchambon said.

"It's there forever," agreed Piper.

The soap star then recalled thinking: "'Does everyone think that about me and they're just being nice when really they think that?'"

Longchambon has been playing Maria Connor on Corrie since 2000 after previously appearing on the soap as an extra.

Following her split from first husband, Matthew Smith, in 2011, the actor competed in the eighth series of Dancing on Ice in 2013. On the show, she was partnered with pro skater Sylvain Longchambon, who she married in 2016.

Coronation Street airs on weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
