The provincial government of Albay on Friday reminded residents to wear face masks in anticipation of potential ashfall following a moderately explosive eruption of Mayon Volcano.

“Muling nagbuga ng abo ang bulkang Mayon ngayong araw, ika-30 ng Oktubre. Pinapaalalahanan ang mga residente na magsuot ng face mask dahil sa posibilidad ng ashfall,” the Albay Provincial Information Office said.

(Mayon Volcano emitted ash again today, October 30. Residents are advised to wear face masks due to the possibility of ashfall.)

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), Mayon Volcano is currently under Alert Level 3, exhibiting a magmatic eruption from a summit lava dome.

It said that there is an increased chances of lava flow and hazardous pyroclastic density currents affecting the upper to middle slopes of the volcano.

It noted that ashfall events are likely to occur and warned that potential explosive activity could happen within weeks or even days.

PHIVOLCS reminded the public of the following precautions under Alert Level 3:

Don’ts

  • Entry to the 6-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone due to the danger of pyroclastic density currents (PDCs), lava flows, rockfalls, and other volcanic hazards
  • Flying of aircraft close to the volcano’s summit

Dos

  • Evacuation within the 6-km radius of the Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ)
  • Increased vigilance against PDCs, lahars and sediment-laden streamflows along channels draining the edifice.
  • In case of ashfall events, cover your nose and mouth with a damp clean cloth or dust mask.
  • Monitor the news and advisories issued by DOST-PHIVOLCS.

PHIVOLCS advised the public to stay updated on Mayon Volcano's status by visiting its official website or social media accounts. —AOL, GMA News
