Nicolas Cage's True Detective Casting Quietly Completes His Lovecraftian Trilogy

Dhruv is a Lead Writer in Screen Rant's New TV division. He has been consistently contributing to the website for over two years and has written thousands of articles covering streaming trends, movie/TV analysis, and pop culture breakdowns.
Before Screen Rant, he was a Senior Writer for The Cinemaholic, covering everything from anime to television, from reality TV to movies.
After high school, he was on his way to become a Civil Engineer. However, he soon realized that writing was his true calling. As a result, he took a leap and never looked back.
Nicolas Cage has played many fascinating characters on the big screen. His filmography is defined by its sheer unpredictability, with the actor moving from one eccentric role to another. Especially in recent years, Cage has not held himself back from putting his incredible range on full display. After being cast in True Detective season 5, he seems all set to further diversify his acting portfolio.
Since Nicolas Cage recently served as the lead of Spider-Noir, True Detective seems to perfectly align with his ongoing career direction. Interestingly, though, before Spider-Noir, the actor starred in a long line of horror movies, establishing himself as a staple in the genre. While most horror fans would recognize him for his role in Longlegs, he also served as the lead in two incredible Lovecraftian horror movies.
Mandy and Color Out of Space are two indie but exceptional cosmic horror movies that are further elevated by Nicolas Cage's performance. The actor seems to be right in his element in both because the absurdities and chaos in Lovecraftian storytelling allow him to leverage his strengths as an actor. After Mandy and Color Out of Space, True Detective season 5 could be his third Lovecraftian project.
After Color Out Of Space & Mandy, True Detective Can Be Nicolas Cage’s 3rd Lovecraftian Project
Richard Stanley's Color Out of Space is a pure cosmic horror movie based on an H.P. Lovecraft story of the same name. When it comes to Panos Cosmatos' Mandy, though, the movie has shades of cosmic terror as it unfolds a linear tale of revenge. While Mandy's story makes it a typical horror action flick, it visually and thematically hints that something Lovecraftian and otherworldly is always at play.
Similar to Mandy, HBO's True Detective does not put its Lovecraftian elements on full display. It unfolds more like a procedural crime thriller with elements of tropical noir. However, beyond its detective drama, True Detective draws subtle references to Lovecraftian lore. Its inclination towards Lovecraftian horror is especially evident in season 1.
The Tuttle/Childress cult, mentioned in both True Detective seasons 1 and 2, worships "The Yellow King" and performs rituals tied to "Carcosa." The two names originate from Ambrose Bierce’s An Inhabitant of Carcosa and Robert W. Chambers’ The King in Yellow, which were both foundations for Lovecraft's literary universe.
Matthew McConaughey, too, is portrayed as a typical Lovecraftian protagonist whose own curiosity and pursuit of understanding the unknowable drives him insane. He even drops pessimistic philosophical rants that directly echo Lovecraftian dread. Even his iconic quote about human consciousness being a misstep in evolution reeks of Lovecraft's belief that humanity cannot escape cosmic insignificance:
“I think human consciousness is a tragic misstep in human evolution. We became too self aware; nature created an aspect of nature separate from itself. We are creatures that should not exist by natural law..."
Considering Nicolas Cage's history with Lovecraftian horror, he could become Matthew McConaughey's perfect replacement in True Detective season 5.
True Detective Season 5 Can Recreate Season 1’s Success If It Leans Into Lovecraftian Horror
True Detective season 1 was lightning in a bottle. Arguably, it delivers the greatest eight episodes of detective storytelling in the history of television. It still feels so distinctive and hard-hitting even a decade after its release that none of its follow-ups have even come close to matching its acclaim and legacy.
Along with Nicolas Cage, Antonio Banderas has been cast as the co-lead in True Detective season 5.
While True Detective season 4 earned better critical ratings and even proved to be more commercially successful, it remains the most divisive season of the show among viewers. Season 4 also struggled to step out of season 1's shadow as it tried too hard to riff on its supernatural Lovecraftian elements without having any solid payoffs.
After True Detective season 4, season 5 must tread carefully but not completely drift away from the show's unique blend of procedural drama and Lovecraftian terror. With Nicolas Cage as one of its leads, True Detective season 5 already has a solid advantage. Hopefully, it will leverage Cage's horror background and prove to be as good as season 1 (if not better).

Mandy (2018) is a psychedelic revenge horror set in 1983, following lumberjack Red Miller after a sadistic cult and its nightmarish biker enforcers destroy his secluded life with Mandy. The slow-burn nightmare eventually erupts into a hallucinatory, ultra-violent revenge odyssey whose heavy-metal imagery and surreal style helped make the film a modern cult classic.
