Oklahoma City Thunder’s Sam Presti Heartbreaking Jalen Williams News Following Frightening Injury

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Jalen Williams needs surgery on a broken left fibula and a dislocated left ankle. General manager Sam Presti shared the diagnosis Monday, a day after Williams went down in the final minutes of a 108-101 win over the Clippers. The team has no return date and will not set one until the operation is done. Presti also had a second injury to report, and his description of Williams' mood is hard to square with the scene on the floor Sunday night.

What Is The Latest On Jalen Williams' Injury?

Jalen Williams was driving toward the rim with 1:14 left when Kris Dunn and Derrick Jones Jr. caught him in the air. He lost his balance and landed with his left leg trapped beneath him. Dunn was assessed a Flagrant 1 after a review. Trainers covered the leg with towels, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander pulled his jersey over his face. The arena went quiet, then fans began chanting “J-Dub.” The 25-year-old guard answered with a thumbs-up as he was wheeled off.

Presti spent time with Williams on Sunday night and again Monday morning. “Dub, as everybody knows, is as tough as they come,” he said at a news conference. Injuries like this often cost a player the rest of the season, and the team has offered no timeline.

How Do The Thunder Cope Without Williams And Cason Wallace?

Cason Wallace also went down Sunday. He has a torn labrum in his left shoulder and needs surgery, with no return date set. Recovery from that procedure usually takes several months. Both players have made an All-Defensive team, Williams in 2024-25 and Wallace last season.

Williams was off to a slow start, averaging 13.7 points, but was still second on the team in scoring behind Gilgeous-Alexander. Oklahoma City is 3-0, so the standings look fine for now. The bigger issue is how little luck this roster has had. Williams missed 49 regular-season games last year, mostly with wrist and hamstring problems, and Chet Holmgren missed what would have been his entire rookie season with a foot injury.

Presti did not dodge it. “Tough night last night,” he said. “There's no way to paint that differently.” He still called the team extremely optimistic about both recoveries and added, “Most importantly, things could have been a lot worse.” As of now, there is no timeline on Williams' return.
