Rory McIlroy is one of the biggest names in golf today, with 28 PGA Tour titles. His father, Gerry, always supported his interest in golf. In fact, both his parents made several sacrifices for Rory's passion. He owes much of his success to his parents and found a way to honor their hardships. Rory was born to parents Gerry and Rosie McIlroy, and they raised him in Holywood, County Down, Northern Ireland. Gerry was a keen golfer and got his son curious about the game early on. Gerry never went professional, but when his son showed interest in the sport, he encouraged Rory to practice and improve his game, and also gave him the support he needed to improve as a young player.
The Sacrifices Rory McIlroy's Parents Made for His Golf Career
Gerry used to work several jobs to help cover the costs of Rory's golfing expenses. He worked as a cleaner and bartender, covering multiple shifts to earn money for his son's training and tournament fees.
Rory said his father was often busy with work, and that was just part of growing up for him. His mother, Rosie, also worked night shifts at a tape factory and looked after him during the day. Both parents worked hard to help Rory and give him a fair chance.
How Gerry Introduced Rory McIlroy to Golf
The first time Gerry took Rory to the golf range he was in a stroller, to simply “soak up” the vibe. His father got him his first plastic club when he was a year and 9 months old. He taught his son the basics of golf and urged him to practise regularly.
Rory's talent for golf became more evident, as he showed skills that were advanced for his age. Gerry even caddied for him until he was 17.
How Gerry McIlroy Helped Rory Become a Golf Champion
Gerry always encouraged Rory, including his participation in junior competitions and his progression into amateur golf. When he recognized his son's passion for golfing, he arranged for Holywood Golf Club professional Michael Bannon to guide him, who became his long-term coach. At the age of 9, Rory won the under-10 World Championship in Doral, Florida. He later went on to win amateur titles before he went professional in 2007.
Rory McIlroy's Relationship With His Father Today
Rory continues to share a close relationship with his father, Gerry. In an interview, Rory called his parents his best friends and thanked them for everything they did to help him pursue his dream. As his success grew, Rory also wanted to provide his parents with financial security for everything they did for him during his early years.
When he won the 2024 Dubai Desert Classic in January 2024, Rory confessed that having his parents there for his successful title defence was one of the year's most special moments.
