Jakarta (ANTARA) - Primary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu'ti called for stronger journalism education and media literacy in schools to expand career opportunities and choices for young people.

"It is important to expand career opportunities and choices for young people, one of which is by strengthening journalism education and media literacy in schools," Mu'ti said here on Thursday.

He made the remarks during a visit to the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) headquarters at the Press Council Building in Jakarta, where he was a guest speaker on a PWI Channel podcast.

He highlighted the important role of journalists and the various challenges facing the press amid the rapid development of the digital era.

According to him, journalism is a noble profession that is greatly needed by society because it not only reports information, but also enlightens, educates, and fosters nationalism.

"We must give our children as many career choices as possible. Journalism is not merely about reporting, but also about enlightening and educating, as well as providing a space for students to learn writing," Mu'ti said.

He said journalism skills can help sharpen critical thinking and the ability to convey ideas clearly and in a structured manner.

In his view, organizations such as PWI are crucial as platforms for maintaining the quality, integrity, and professionalism of the national press.

Meanwhile, PWI Chair Akhmad Munir appreciated the minister's visit to PWI.

"We thank the minister for visiting PWI. Hopefully, this will be an initial step toward bringing media literacy through journalists into schools," he said.

PWI welcomed the initiative and stressed the importance of reviving media literacy and journalism training programs for students. The move is expected to equip young people to become more discerning when filtering information and protect themselves from rampant disinformation.
