Emmerdale star explains unscripted moment in exit scenes – did you spot it?

Emmerdale's Mackenzie Boyd was seen temporarily leaving the Dales this week, but his exit scenes contained an "unscripted" blink-and-you-miss-it nod to actor Lawrence Robb's stint on Strictly Come Dancing.

Appearing on This Morning today, Lawrence explained that it was only ever meant to be a joke, but it ended up staying in the final edit.

"Mackenzie was going away to learn about farm equipment in Germany, and he told Charity that he had got this course that Robert had booked him on," he said.

"And it made sense because Noah had just moved to Germany. And he was like, 'it'll be fine, you can come out and visit me and Noah, it'll be fine'. And then at the end – I think as joke, the first time – I did a little shimmy to celebrate going to Germany. And they've kept it in!"

When hosts Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley asked if he expected it to stay in the episode, Lawrence laughed: "No! No."

He recalled: "Everyone knew that I was going to Strictly so the whole cast and crew knew I was doing it by that point, so it was kind of a little joke."

Speaking at last month's Inside Soap Awards, Emma Atkins – who played Charity – had teased the cheeky little moment.

She told The Sun: "He has this moment where he tells Charity he is going to work in Germany, and at the end of the scene I say 'Go on then, you may as well go' and he does this little flick, and I was like, 'the audience are going to know'. It was very very well done.

"I love him and he's part of my furniture at work and I'll miss him. We're a team, so now it's like, 'where’s my wingman gone?'"

On Strictly, Lawrence and his partner Jowita Przystał scored 20 out of 40 for their Rumba last weekend. This week, he is impersonating Ricky Martin for Icons Week.

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 8pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX and YouTube. Strictly Come Dancing airs on BBC One and streams on iPlayer.
