Ah, the MTV Video Music Awards, where Kanye West once proved that, even if you theoretically have a point, there is most definitely a wrong place and wrong time to share it.
But at least the VMAs has always been an awards show where the shocking and unexpected are, well, expected to happen, from Britney Spears bringing the house down in 2001 with the help of a Burmese python named Banana to Lady Gaga showing up decked out in meat in 2010.
And even though most of the Best New Artist nominees for the 2026 MTV VMAs, taking place Sept. 27 at Los Angeles' Peacock Theater, weren't even born yet when Britney and Madonna kissed onstage in 2003, years are but a construct to the Material Girl, who leads the field with 11 nominations and will be opening the show.
Right behind her is Taylor Swift with nine nominations, the Life of a Showgirl: Encore artist still finding the VMAs a hospitable place to be honored despite what happened when she won her very first Moon Person in 2009.
Kanye cutting her off as he did to shout out Beyoncé was ultimately a brief interruption, a slight malfunction, en route to Taylor amassing 30 VMAs to date, including a record five Video of the Year awards.

She's currently tied with Beyoncé—the proprietor of a few of her own VMA surprises—at 30, but will at the very least edge ahead by one when she's honored with the inaugural Artist Director Honors for her contributions to visual storytelling.
Fittingly, Taylor's "Patient Zero" music video will also premiere during the ceremony. And considering her VMAs history, who knows what else she might share?!

Kanye West, 2009
The rapper crashed the stage when Taylor Swift won Best Female Video because he thought Beyoncé "had one of the best videos of all time." When Bey later won for Video of the Year, she asked T.Swift to join her on stage to have her moment.

Kurt Cobain vs. Axl Rose, 1992
The two were involved in one of the most famous rock feuds. At the 1992 VMAs, tensions ran high backstage, where Cobain's wife Courtney Love, who also brought along then-newborn daughter Frances Bean, taunted Rose, prompting the Guns N' Roses frontman to threaten to beat up Cobain if he didn't shut his "bitch" up. Kurt then told Love, sarcastically, "Shut up, bitch!"
After he performed with his band Nirvana, the group's drummer Dave Grohl kept saying "Hi, Axl!" into his mic.

Amid an ongoing feud between Eminem and Moby, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog poked fun at their beef while roasting the latter artist to his face in the VMAs audience. Triumph then attempted to do the same to Eminem, who was not in the mood.
Eminem later took to the stage to accept the award for Best Male Video and said mid-speech, "That little Moby girl threw me out of my zone for a minute."
