Masked men steal RM1mil in gold from Sungai Petani shop

Four masked men armed with hammers and sharp weapons fled with gold jewellery worth up to RM1 million after robbing a goldsmith outlet at a shopping mall in Sungai Petani, Kedah, last night.

Kuala Muda police chief Hanyan Ramlan said the robbery took place at about 7.20pm, with two suspects smashing three glass display counters and grabbing the jewellery while two accomplices waited about 20m away.

“Initial investigations found that the group arrived on two motorcycles, with two of the suspects entering the shop while the other two waited outside the premises.

“They smashed the display cases and took the items inside,” Bernama quoted him as saying in a statement.

Hanyan said the outlet owner estimated the value of the stolen jewellery at between RM700,000 and RM1 million, pending a full audit of the missing items.

Two employees who were in the shop during the robbery were unhurt.

Police are checking the registration numbers of the motorcycles used by the suspects to flee the scene.

The case is being investigated under Sections 395 and 397 of the Penal Code for gang robbery and armed robbery.

Hanyan said the same goldsmith outlet was also targeted in 2024, with losses estimated at RM1 million.
