Mary Poppins May Return in New, Darker TV Series: Report
Mary Poppins may be swooping back down from the sky soon enough. According to Deadline, the classic character, immortalized on screen by Julie Andrews in the 1964 classic and revived slightly less successfully by Emily Blunt in 2018, may return soon in a reboot series based more closely on the original novels.
Per Deadline, “the Mary Poppins of the novels is often noted for being more mysterious, mercurial and dangerous than her film incarnation, and the adventures in the books are magical, surreal and sometimes frightening.”
Tom Winchester of Pure Fiction Television is developing and producing the show, having optioned the rights to the character and books from author P.L. Travers’s estate. The Deadline report suggests that while Disney is not currently actively involved with the series, “very early-stage conversations are taking place” with the company. TBD on whether the super-nanny will be heading to Disney+ anytime soon.
