Suspended deputy national police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya had plans to escape from jail and threatened witnesses, according to intelligence, the State told the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Sibiya, 59, appeared in court on charges of the sexual grooming of a child, rape, and trafficking of persons.

He was arrested on Monday night for allegedly sexually grooming a 16-year-old girl between July and August this year, and allegedly raping an 18-year-old girl at a Sandton hotel in May.

According to the State, threats had been made against witnesses by Sibiya and his “cabal” as recently as 14:00 on Tuesday.

The court heard that several voice notes and videos were sent to the witnesses, intimidating them into withdrawing the charges.
