Boston Blue star teases potential return for Blue Bloods icon Tom Selleck in spin-off

Donnie Wahlberg has teased a potential return for Blue Bloods icon Tom Selleck in the spin-off Boston Blue, saying it would require "something really special" to get the actor on board.

The spin-off, which sees Wahlberg reprise his role from the original series as Danny Reagan, is currently airing its second season on CBS in the US.

Speaking to People about a potential reunion with former co-star Tom Selleck, Wahlberg said recently: "I learned so much from him, and I have the utmost respect for him. I love him and I miss him. I want him to be on the show at some point."

However, he noted that Selleck’s return wouldn't happen without certain conditions being met. "I love him and respect him so much. I know what it will require," he explained.

He continued: "It’s going to require the most thoughtful, elegant episode that the Brandons [co-creators Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis] and I can pull together. And he will do it, but it has to be something really special, because he takes what he does very seriously. And he takes the legacy of the show seriously. He takes Frank Reagan seriously.”

He added that Selleck has been "very supportive" of him and Boston Blue, but that "he was a perfectionist on set every single day" and that "when the time is right, we will, hopefully, have something exceptional enough for him."

Selleck played NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan on Blue Bloods from its pilot episode in 2010 through to its final chapter in 2024.
