First casualty retrieved from Eastleigh building collapse

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 30 – Rescue teams have retrieved the body of the first casualty from the collapsed multi-storey building on 9th Street in Eastleigh, Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan has announced.

Hassan said the victim was a woman, expressing grief over the loss as the search for people still trapped beneath the rubble entered its eighth day.

In a statement posted on X, the MP conveyed his condolences to the deceased’s family, relatives and friends.

“I urge the disaster management teams to redouble their efforts and accelerate the operation, and I call on all relevant agencies to provide every resource needed to bring the remaining victims out as quickly and safely as possible,” Hassan said.

He urged rescue teams to intensify the operation, saying families of those still missing were anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones.

About 16 people remained unaccounted for in the latest update, with rescue teams working around the clock to reach the lower sections of the debris.
