Vice President Sara Duterte and her husband, Manases Carprio, recorded P85.3 million income from 2007 to 2025, a witness from the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) told the impeachment court Thursday.
Lawyer Anne Loraine Garcia-Marquez, chief of staff of BIR Commissioner Charlito Martin Mendoza, made the testimony during Day 36 of the impeachment trial of the Vice President.
“The income net of tax from 2007 to 2025 for spouses Manasas Carpio and Sara Duterte, based on our summary, is ₱85,343,803.23,” Garcia-Marquez said.
“Income net of tax pertains to all income, less than deductions or expenses, and taxes due to a taxpayer,” Garcia-Marquez added.
The BIR official also testified that the Vice President recorded P1.058 million worth of what she identified as other income on top of her compensation income in 2024, and that the Vice President posted another P1.082 million in other income outside of her compensation income in 2025.
“[These are] Audited Financial Statements that the taxpayer [Vice President] submitted as an attachment to her income tax return,” she added.
In a separate press conference, private prosecutor Benjamin Tolosa, Jr. said the P85 million of the Duterte-Carpio couple from 2007 to 2025 raises questions given that their latest net worth declaration in their joint Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth as of 2025 is already at P98 million.
“Their net worth increased by P91 million from 2007 to 2025. Now, compare this with the declared income net of taxes, which is P85.34 million. Ang question roon, paano nangyari na iyong itinaas ng net worth mo e mas malaki sa dineklara mo during the same period?” Tolosa said.
(How come that the amount of your net worth increase exceeded your declared income?)
“And you have to take to consideration, you still have living expenses. But kahit nga sabihin mo na in 19 years, wala kang ginastos, lahat ng kinita mo tinago mo, kaya dumagdag lahat yan sa net worth mo. Kailangan pa rin sagutin ‘yung katanungan: bakit sumobra pa rin [ang net worth sa kita mo ayon sa BIR]? Tolosa added.
(Even if you did not touch your income for 19 years and you kept them all, and this accounted for your increase in net worth. The question remains: Why is your net worth bigger than your declared income?)
The prosecution is presenting evidence to prove Article 2 of the impeachment case against the Vice President: amassed unexplained wealth due to alleged failure to truthfully disclose assets in her SALN and failure to divest in businesses as required for the President and Vice President under a Constitutional provision. —LDF, GMA News
