Trigger Point season 4 is a hit with viewers as fans call for season 5 renewal

Trigger Point viewers have spoken, and the message is clear: they want Vicky McClure's tense thriller to return for a fifth season on ITV.

The series follows Metropolitan Police explosives officer Lana Washington (McClure) as she faces off against escalating bomb threats in London – and the sinister individuals behind them.

The latest episodes saw Lana's inner circle compromised in a plot by professional mercenaries, which risked killing thousands and sparking a globally destabilising conflict.

Without spoiling too much (check out our Trigger Point season 4 ending explained for details), the story left McClure's protagonist considering whether to leave her high-risk career for good.

The question is, what does that mean for a potential fifth season of Trigger Point? We asked Radio Times readers if they want to see Lana back in action, and the verdict was overwhelming.

"Absolutely yes," wrote Martin Amos on Facebook. "Another series, best drama on TV in my opinion."

Alyson Jones agreed: "It is a brilliant series and I would love to see a series five. It's just so exciting to watch with such talented actors – well done."

Paul Watson called for "several more series," noting that "each one has gotten better than the previous," but others were more cautious about the prospect of a follow-up.

Nikki Fraser considered the season 4 finale to be a "natural ending" for the "brilliant series", and wouldn't appreciate seeing "producers try to drag it out with new actors or spin-offs".

Indeed, a frequently expressed opinion was that Trigger Point wouldn't work without McClure, with comments appearing broadly disinterested in a new or supporting character taking over.

A minority were more critical, with Tracy Grensinger feeling that it had "run its course" and fallen into a rut. "It was fantastic but it's the same every time now," their comment read.

Pauline Brine also seemed frustrated with the show's repetitive structure, writing: "No [to season 5]! How many more times can she say, 'You're stood on a bomb!'"

Others questioned the plausibility of the show's scenarios, which even Trigger Point head writer Chris Brandon has admitted are heightened for dramatic effect.

He told press that "things happen in Trigger Point that might not happen in real life – and [expert advisor Joel] very generously humours the writers when we bring him some bonkers scenario".

On the possibility of a fifth entry, McClure recently told Radio Times: "Who knows? For me, it always boils down to the audience. They're the deciders and, my word, they've been so supportive to Trigger Point over the years.

"If everyone watches and everybody in their droves are going, 'this can’t be the end', then there's a conversation to be had."

Earlier this month, McClure picked up a best actor trophy for Trigger Point at the public-voted National Television Awards, which should also reassure her that viewers are still firmly in Lana's corner.
