Apple TV has acquired a new crime thriller led by a Mindhunter star.

Even though it only ran for 19 episodes, spread across two seasons, the success of Mindhunter has had an outsized impact on the way that so much of streaming television has embraced crime thrillers of all sorts. Apple TV will soon be debuting Nocturne, which will speak to fans of the David Fincher-directed series. But the streamer has just announced that it has acquired a Mindhunter lead's new show, which draws from a bestselling novel.

Apple TV has landed Dustfall, which is described as a “gripping six-episode crime drama” that stars Emmy nominee Anna Torv, known for her role as Wendy Carr in Mindhunter. The new series is “a propulsive, atmospheric tropic noir,” according to the official press release, and it centers on Torv in the role of Antigone “Tig” Pollard. A seasoned detective, Tig has a deep sense of justice.

That's challenged by a “world where victims are doubted, and predators hide in plain sight.” To make matters worse, the legal system often too often falls short. In particular, Tig is brought in to investigate a sexual assault case that takes an even darker turn when a key suspect dies. Tig also has to uncover deep secrets from her adolescence. It is based on The Unbelieved by Vikki Petraitis, which won the inaugural A&U Crime Prize.

Dustfall is set to premiere on Apple TV in 2027, except for Australia, where it is available on ABC and ABC's iview service. It is also subject to premiere rights held by the BBC and ZDF in their respective territories, with Apple TV having acquired the rights to Dustfall from distributor Federation International.

Along with Torv, who is known for her role as Wendy Carr in Mindhunter, as well as her Emmy-nominated guest turn in The Last of Us, the cast of Dustfall includes Juliet Stevenson, Peter Fenton, Bert LaBonté, Zoe Phillips, Kate Box, Lila McGuire, Harry Gilchrist, Ling Cooper Tang, Gemma Chua-Tran, Alice Ansara, Martin Sacks, Theo Haitana, Conrad Coleby, Ben Knight, Kirsty O’Connor, Jay Ryan, Ed Wightman and Luke J. Morgan.

Dustfall is directed by Emma Freeman, who previously worked with Torv on the drama The Newsreader, with Dianne Taylor, Stuart Page, Belinda Chayko and Beatrix Christian adapting the script. It's also executive produced by Xavier Marchand and Daisy Gilbert for Moonriver, Deb Balderstone for Soapbox Pictures and Torv, in addition to Brett Sleigh and Rachel Okine for ABC.

Dustfall, a somewhat rare acquisition by Apple TV, which is known for its originals. It'll fit nicely along with the Australian series Last Seen, which emerged as a Stephen King-approved thriller.
