Weija-Gbawe MP urges urgent repairs to Weija-Mallam highway stretch

Translate

The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has appealed to the Minister of Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, to order urgent repairs to the Weija Junction-Mallam Overpass stretch of the Kasoa-Cape Coast Highway, citing worsening road conditions and severe traffic congestion.

In a letter to the Minister, the MP expressed concern about extensive potholes along the stretch, which he said were causing significant delays and hardship for thousands of commuters who use the road daily.

According to Mr Shaib, a journey that would ordinarily take about three minutes from Weija Junction to Mallam can now take more than two hours as motorists struggle to navigate the damaged sections.

He said the road serves as a key link between communities in Weija-Gbawe, Kasoa, Winneba, Korle-Bu, Kaneshie, Odorkor, Dansoman and other parts of Accra, making its deteriorating condition a major concern for residents and commercial transport operators.

Road condition raises healthcare concerns

Mr Shaib also highlighted the potential impact of the congestion on access to healthcare, particularly for people travelling to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and Cocoa Clinic.

He warned that delays along the stretch could create additional difficulties for patients seeking medical attention, especially in emergencies where timely access to healthcare is critical.

The MP has therefore urged the Minister to direct the Ghana Highway Authority and other relevant agencies to inspect the affected section without delay and undertake immediate repairs to ease congestion and improve traffic flow.

MP calls for lasting solution

Beyond immediate repairs, Mr Shaib is calling for a long-term intervention to prevent the recurrence of potholes and ensure the road remains motorable.

He has proposed proper drainage systems and resurfacing as part of measures to address the underlying problems affecting the stretch.

Mr Shaib said his appeal was being made on behalf of residents of the Weija-Gbawe constituency, who continue to bear the effects of the road’s deteriorating condition.

He expressed hope that the Minister would treat the matter as urgent and take the necessary steps to reduce commuters’ hardship and improve road safety along the busy highway.
