Marvel officially introduces a new X-Men villain team who pose a huge threat to the new generation of mutant heroes. The X-Men are bound to pass on the torch of mutant survival from veteran leaders to their protegées. Charles Xavier's original five students laid the foundations for the team's dynamics, but subsequent line-ups have put their own spin on the X-Men with countless waves of recruits. Recently, the All-New, All-Different X-Men lineup featured international heroes, which eventually gave way to apprentice teams like the New Mutants, Academy X, and Generation X.
While these younger heroes are powerful enough to stand their ground against seasoned villains like Magneto, the Hellfire Club, and Sentinels, they also gather their own rogues' galleries tailored to their specific power sets and personal conflicts. The New Mutants faced mystical adversaries like the Demon Bear and Belasco, while Generation X battled foes like the energy-vampire Emplate, and younger squads like Academy X faced radical anti-mutant hate groups like Reverend Stryker's Purifiers. As strong as they might be, young mutant teams must prove their mettle outside the shadow of their mentors.
In Generation X-23, Laura Kinney steps into a protective leadership role alongside her clone sister Gabby to guide a brand-new class of designated "X-numbers". Turns out, these mutants are actually artificial mutates engineered by the insidious Facility, the exact weaponization organization responsible for Laura's own traumatic origin. Laura takes charge of the group to help them come to terms with their nature, meeting new villains along the way.
5 The Church Of The Generated Makes Their Official X-Men Debut
Generation X-23 #9; Written By Jody Houser; Art By Marco Renna & Erick Arciniega
In Generation X-23 #9, Laura Kinney, Gabby, and the young artificial mutates X-74 a.k.a. Time Bomb, X-92 a.k.a. Port, X-99 a.k.a. Surprise, and X-80 go on a road trip to the Facility, where they plan to face their traumatic origins once and for all. However, their journey comes to a grinding halt just before the issue wraps on a massive cliffhanger, as they're suddenly ambushed and intercepted by a newly organized team before they can reach their destination. Led by X-Infinite, the Church of the Generated stop Laura's superhero team in their tracks, and X-80 is barely able to predict their arrival seconds earlier.
The Church of the Generated is an ideological cult composed of some of the Facility's genetically modified test subjects. Instead of seeing their engineered nature as a curse to be cured, like Laura Kinney and her artificial mutate friends, the Church embraces their status as a manufactured evolution, and they actively oppose the heroes' efforts to dismantle the Facility to protect its cruel experimentation. The Church members are tragically misguided, considering how painful its procedures are for children who never chose to develop superpowers.
4 X-Infinite Leads The Church Of The Generated
X-Infinite Is A Dark Mirror To Laura Kinney And Her Friends
The enigmatic leader of the Church of the Generated, X-Infinite, has a dark background that's deeply intertwined with the Facilities' cruel experiments. X-Infinite sports a long black mohawk with short mutton chops, and he wears a long white coat with bright green accents on top of a black uniform with a gray vest. He feels an immense resentment toward natural mutants, a worldview born from his own painful origins at the Facility. X-Infinite's mutate ability is extremely useful for the Facility and the Church of the Generated, as it allows him to graft artificial secondary mutations onto others.
In X-Infinite's earliest comic appearances, scientists exploited his power to transform his fellow captives into weapons. Tragically, those early unauthorized grafts proved unstable and killed the recipients, which affected X-Infinite to the core. However, instead of rejection, X-Infinity chose to embrace his artificial nature and gather other survivors into a zealous off-grid cult. During their first encounters at Facility 23, Laura fought X-Infinite after a tragic explosion cost the life of another test subject, but he now doubles down on his heartless motivations with the help of the Church of the Generated.
3 Bellona Is X-Infinite's Second In Command
Bellona Joins X-Infinite's Betrayal Of Laura Kinney And The Facilities' Victims
Bellona brings a volatile history to her position as second-in-command within the Church of the Generated. Her origin traces back to Alchemax Genetics, where scientists created her as an exact genetic clone of Laura Kinney under the designation X23_1BEL. Unlike her genetic sisters, Bellona suffers from a case of oculocutaneous albinism, which leaves her with striking white hair, pale skin, and red eyes. Her genetic modifications left her without Laura's signature accelerated healing factor, but she compensates with artificial, retractable adamantium claws. Bellona is also insensitive to physical pain, a trait that initially stemmed from lethal nanites placed inside her system by Alchemax.
Bellona's complex relationship with Laura and Gabby Kinney creates an intense emotional rift now that she joins X-Infinite's Church of the Generated. Years ago, Bellona rebelled against her Alchemax creators alongside Gabby and their other clone sisters, though she remained the most cynical and hesitant to trust Laura. After a long absence from the X-Men family, during which she operated as an underground criminal mercenary, Bellona seems to have found a new purpose within the Church. Her hot-tempered personality and quick impulse to resort to heavy firearms makes her a huge threat to her former allies now.
2 X-88 Is The Church Of The Generated's Muscle
X-88's Body Is Cybernetically Enhanced
X-88's backstory is also tied to Facility 23, where unethical scientists subjected her to extensive genetic alterations against her will. But unlike the more agile, stealth-oriented clones developed by the organization's weaponization programs, the Facility engineered X-88 to possess great physical density, superhuman strength, and near-impenetrable durability. Most notably, X-88 received metal wings similar to Archangel's, plus a metal scorpion exoskeleton grafted onto the lower half of her body. These traits leave her looking much more physically imposing than her fellow test subjects.
Sadly, X-88's personal motivations seem to come from X-Infinite's psychological manipulation, who convinced the giant that her monstrous form serves an evolutionary purpose. X-88's loyalty dictates her actions in Generation X-23, where she spearheads the Church of the Generated's ambush against the heroes, using her sharp wings to rip off their car's roof and her scorpion body to block the road in front of them. Of all the members of the Church of the Generated, X-88's massive metallic body poses the biggest physical threat.
1 One Of The Cuckoo Sisters Joins The Church Of The Generated
X-Infinite's Villain Team Includes A Treacherous Mutant
The inclusion of a lone Stepford Cuckoo in the Church of the Generated adds a deeper layer of betrayal to X-Infinite's inner circle. Cloaked in a garment marked with a large white X, this particular sister, potentially the historically malicious Esme Cuckoo, departs from the telepathic quintet's typical hive-mind behavior to join a villain team who opposes mutant heroes. This Cuckoo sibling's motivations likely stem from the trauma of the post-Krakoan era and her own artificial origins as a clone harvested from Emma Frost's eggs inside the Weapon Plus facility known as The World.
Given that she was grown in a lab rather than born naturally, Esme Cuckoo shares a genetic kinship with X-Infinite’s artificial mutates. Her powerful telepathy provides the Church with an invaluable weapon to shield their minds from Laura Kinney and reinforce the cult’s fanatical dogma from within. This Stepford Cuckoo turns her back on her species, and worst of all, all for a team that only furthers the cruel treatment of innocent children. While X-88 towers over her, the Cuckoo sister's presence on the front line of the ambush may turn the tide in favor of the Church of the Generated, considering her psionic powers.
