Quentin Tarantino's long-awaited tenth movie is one step closer to becoming a reality, although fans shouldn't expect the filmmaker to rush back behind the camera just yet.

Tarantino has repeatedly maintained that he plans to make ten movies before stepping away from filmmaking, with 2019's Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood serving as his ninth. While his plans for the final movie have changed considerably over the years, Tarantino has now confirmed that he already has a finished script on the docket.

Appearing on the UK talk show The Graham Norton Show, Tarantino revealed that the screenplay for his final movie is already complete. "I've written a script that I really like," he explained.

The update is significant considering how long Tarantino's 10th movie has been in development. His previous project, The Movie Critic, was ultimately scrapped, leaving the filmmaker's final movie without a clear direction.

However, Tarantino isn't immediately moving from the page to production.

Tarantino revealed that his immediate priority is The Popinjay Cavalier, his upcoming West End play starring Sacha Baron Cohen. The production is scheduled to open in March, giving Tarantino another creative project to complete before he turns his attention back toward filmmaking.

The director made it clear that he wanted to take some time after the play rather than immediately begin production on his final movie. Check out his comments below:

"I want to do the play and see who I am, then I'll go back and spend time with my family and live a little and then see what I want to do," Tarantino said.

Tarantino's approach has always been to wait until the right story presents itself rather than making another movie simply because he feels obligated to continue directing. While the existence of a completed script is encouraging news, Tarantino has not revealed the story, title, cast, or potential release date for his tenth movie.

In the meantime, the filmmaker's work continues to expand beyond traditional feature filmmaking. Tarantino's wrote the script for a new movie, expanding upon the Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood character Cliff Booth (played by Brad Pitt), which is being revisited in Netflix's upcoming The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, which might just be a risk he doesn't need to take.

Whether the mysterious script becomes his tenth and final movie is still open to speculation, especially given the back and forth the director has experienced in the hiatus since his last directorial venture. For the moment, Tarantino seems more interested in stepping away from filmmaking for a while, spending time with his family, and figuring out what he actually wants his final movie to be.

After a career built around making movies on his own terms, it would be fitting if Tarantino's final movie arrived only when he decided the time was right.
