Quentin Tarantino Meets Dracula In This 30-Episode Horror Series

A 30-episode horror series is the perfect combination of Quentin Tarantino and Dracula, but it comes with a huge twist. Some horror series can be found among the best TV shows of all time, many of them mixed with other genres. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Twilight Zone, The Haunting of Hill House, and Hannibal are some examples of the best horror TV shows of all time and how versatile this genre can be, with supernatural creatures, ghosts, and humans that are more terrifying than any monster.

It must be noted that some of the greatest filmmakers of all time, and not just from the horror genre, have been involved in some of the best horror TV shows, such as David Lynch, Mike Flanagan, Don Mancini, and Guillermo del Toro, adding an extra quality to them. Joining that list is Quentin Tarantino, who didn’t create or direct a horror TV show but was the mind behind the movie that made way for it, and that’s From Dusk till Dawn: The Series.

Developed by Robert Rodriguez, From Dusk till Dawn: The Series premiered on El Rey Network in 2014, almost two decades after the movie was released. From Dusk till Dawn: The Series has the style of Quentin Tarantino in terms of graphic violence and generous amounts of blood, but it also has a lot from Dracula, as it’s a vampire story with its own rich mythology, traditions, and rules. From Dusk till Dawn: The Series is one of the most underrated horror shows of the 2010s, but it’s a must-watch for fans of the genre.

From Dusk till Dawn: The Series introduces the audience to brothers Seth (D. J. Cotrona) and Richie Gecko (Zane Holtz), criminals wanted by the FBI. Seth is the mastermind of the two, while Richie is more impulsive and savage. The Geckos are on the run after a bank robbery that went off the rails, and so they plan to cross the border and go to México to hide there. On their way there, they take the Fuller family – minister Jacob (Robert Patrick), his daughter Kate (Madison Davenport), and his son Scott (Brandon Soo Hoo) – hostage and drive their RV to the border.

The Geckos and the Fullers stop at a bar on the road, where things take an unexpected turn as the bar is full of thirsty vampires, who will do anything to stop them from leaving. There, they also meet Santanico Pandemonium (Eiza González), the main dancer at the club, as well as the vampire queen, who leads the rest of the vampires into a feeding frenzy. From Dusk till Dawn: The Series follows the same basic premise as the movie, but does a lot more thanks to its longer format.

From Dusk till Dawn: The Series expands the mythology of its type of vampires a lot deeper, going into the backstory of Santanico Pandemonium and exploring the origin of the bar (which, at the end of the movie, is revealed to be atop an Aztec temple) and more. From Dusk till Dawn: The Series also better develops the Geckos and their relationship, their past, their plans, and their individual goals. With the Fullers, it goes a lot deeper into their family trauma and how this has shaped them.

Whether From Dusk till Dawn: The Series is better than the movie or not ultimately depends on each viewer, but it definitely adds to it and serves as a perfect complement to it to better understand the lore of these vampires.

Why From Dusk Till Dawn TV Show Is Now A Lost Series

From Dusk till Dawn: The Series ran for three seasons, and though it still had more stories to tell, the show had an abrupt ending. From Dusk till Dawn: The Series wasn’t officially canceled, and instead, its actors were released from their contracts. From Dusk till Dawn: The Series was never picked up for a fourth season, effectively ending its run and allowing its cast members to pursue other projects.

Unfortunately, From Dusk till Dawn: The Series has now become a lost series as it’s not streaming anywhere. From Dusk till Dawn: The Series was distributed internationally by Netflix, but its licensing agreements expired, leading to its removal in 2022. On top of that, El Rey Network ended on December 31, 2020, so there are no reruns, and the show doesn’t have a streaming home.

It’s hard to say if From Dusk till Dawn: The Series will find a streaming home in the near future, but until then, it stands as one of the best yet most underrated vampire shows of the 2010s.
