Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Avatar: Seven Havens season 1, episodes 1, 2, & 3.The Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise has finally produced a sequel to The Legend of Korra in the form of Avatar: Seven Havens, but the new show hasn't explained what happened to Korra yet. Though the Last Airbender franchise has been solely focused on Aang for the past 12 years through projects like Netflix's live-action remake and the Avatar Aang movie, Korra is finally coming into the limelight again.
Korra's return to the forefront of the franchise also comes with quite a few lingering questions that fans have been waiting years to have answered. After all, the ending of The Legend of Korra didn't reveal Korra's ultimate fate, as she and Asami only began their relationship with one another. There are still decades of Korra's life that The Last Airbender hasn't explored yet, even though both Avatar Aang and The Legend of Korra explored Aang's later life after the ending of the original series.
Luckily, Seven Havens has promised to provide some insight into Korra's later years for the fist time on-screen. Unluckily, they're not nearly as happy as many fans of The Legend of Korra may have hoped. Seven Havens has only just begun, and much of Korra's later life and legacy are still shrouded in mystery, but what the show has revealed so far isn't very flattering.
Korra Died & Was Succeeded By Seven Havens' New Avatars: Pavi & Nisha
The very fact that Avatar: Seven Havens focuses on a new Avatar is, unfortunately, proof that Korra is dead in the new show. Though Korra broke the Avatar Cycle in The Legend of Korra and lost access to her past lives, she managed to start the cycle of rebirth anew. Because of that, the only way for a new Avatar to even be possible is if Korra died and her spirit was reincarnated. It's for that same reason that Aang was already dead in The Legend of Korra.
Korra may be dead, but thanks to the cycle of rebirth, her spirit lives on in her successors: Earthbending twins named Pavi and Nisha. In a first for the franchise and the Avatar Cycle in general, Seven Havens has two Avatars at the same time. It's not entirely clear how it happened yet, but the fact that they're twins almost certainly has something to do with it. It's also possible that Korra somehow changed the Avatar Cycle when she restarted it in The Legend of Korra season 2.
Nisha and Pavi being the reincarnated form of Korra also means that her spirit lives on in Seven Havens. Every Avatar can speak with their past lives by entering the Avatar State; Aang routinely spoke to Roku a century after his death, and Korra spoke with Aang at least once. Pavi and Nisha won't be able to speak with anyone before Korra, as she restarted the Avatar Cycle, but they should at least be able to speak with her, once they figure out how to enter the Avatar State.
Korra will also appear in Seven Havens in a much more literal sense. The trailer for Seven Havens already teased what is presumably a flashback scene to Korra while she's in the Avatar State. In all likelihood, that means a future episode will have Nisha and Pavi discover the truth behind the Cataclysm and show the fateful event from Korra's perspective. It should be similar to some of the flashbacks Aang got in The Legend of Korra.
Question 1 of 3
Korra Destroyed The Avatar's Reputation & Had Some Involvement In A Devastating Cataclysm
Korra's death is interesting, but the circumstances of her death mean much more to Seven Havens. The world of Seven Havens is drastically different from its predecessors. Instead of the functional society of The Last Airbender and the rapidly modernizing cities of The Legend of Korra, Seven Havens is apocalyptic. Violent storms ravage the world and humanity has founded seven Havens, walled city-states that keep their inhabitants safe from the elements. Pavi and Nisha end up in a Haven named Elora, the "Haven of wind and sand."
Allegedly, Korra is the reason the world of Seven Havens is so apocalyptic. The show's world was devastated during an event known as the Cataclysm, and all the residents of Elora are convinced Korra caused it. Even Captain Karthik, a prominent member of the White Lotus and probably the leading Avatar historian in Seven Havens, was inclined to believe that Korra caused the Cataclysm.
A play put on by the people of Elora is the only account Seven Havens has provided of what happened during the Cataclysm so far. In that dramatic retelling, benders from all four nations rose up against Korra during the Cataclysm and defeated her in battle. While sparse and likely heavily opinionated, that play is all Seven Havens has revealed about Korra's involvement in the Catacylsm so far.
Because they believe that Korra caused the Cataclysm and forced humanity to barely survive in an apocalyptic world, the humans of Seven Havens now despise Korra and the Avatar in general. In the show's premiere, citizens of Elora put on a play to voice their hatred of Korra, and several characters openly admit that they believe the Avatar is a destructive force and a blight upon humanity. Because of that widespread opinion, Pavi and Nisha must hide their status as the Avatars.
It's not yet clear what the Cataclysm was exactly, but Seven Havens has revealed quite a bit about its effects. As previously mentioned, the world is now apocalyptic and ravaged by massive storms as a consequence of the Cataclysm. There are also now "Anomalies," seemingly immaterial apparitions of red light that are immune to bending and can drive people mad. Interestingly, Karthik also asserts that fewer people are being born with the ability to bend elements, which is also likely tied to the Cataclysm.
It's very important to note that while humanity believes Korra caused the Cataclysm, there's no guarantee that she actually did. Karthik outright says that since it's been so long since the Cataclysm there's no way to verify what actually happened. Karthik seems to be working on an incomplete oral history due to the passage of time and, presumably, the destruction of any records about Korra.
It seems far more likely that Korra was actually trying to avert the Cataclysm. The benders who rose up against her simply didn't understand the implications of what they were doing and inadvertently stopped Korra before she could restore balance. Still, the result is the same: by the time of Seven Havens, Korra's legacy has been destroyed, along with the reputation of the Avatar as an agent of peace and balance.
Seven Havens Takes Place At Least 200 Years After The Legend Of Korra
The timeline of Seven Havens and how it fits into the wider Last Airbender timeline is just as murky as Korra's involvement in the Cataclysm. Based on Pavi and Nisha's age, Korra should have died about a decade before the beginning of Seven Havens. It's not entirely clear how old Nisha and Pavi are, but they are clearly children. They also both have difficulty remembering anything from just a few years prior, which may be due to them being too young to form memories from early childhood. As an estimation, they're likely around the age of 10 or younger.
Pavi and Nisha's young age would normally mean that Korra died about 10 years before Seven Havens, but there's a wrinkle in that. In Seven Havens episode 3, while he was explaining the White Lotus to Jae, Captain Karthik says that the Cataclysm occurred "two centuries ago," which would mean Seven Havens takes place in about 400 AG, after the Air Nomad Genocide. That timeline is also supported by the residents of Elora and the other characters in Seven Havens.
The way the residents of Elora speak about the Avatar and the cataclysm makes it clear that no living person remembers a time before the Havens were founded. In the premiere's play, for example, the narrator says that "our ancestors banded together to form the Seven Havens." Korra and the very notion of the Avatar have slipped into legend in Seven Havens. Even the White Lotus organization can only parse together bits and pieces of information about the Avatar.
There are a few possible explanations for why the Cataclysm happened 200 years ago, yet Pavi and Nisha are only about 10 years old. The first and most likely theory is that Nisha and Pavi experienced something similar to Aang, who was trapped in ice for a century. It's possible that Korra did die during the Cataclysm but then, for some reason they can't yet remember, Nisha and Pavi were suspended for centuries, long enough for Korra to slip into legend.
That theory is also supported by Seven Havens episode 2. When they encountered the Anomaly, Pavi and Nisha saw flashes of what were presumably memories. In those flashbacks, they were traveling through the desert when they encountered another Anomaly and were violently ripped away from one another. Based on the supernatural powers of the Anomaly, it's possible that the encounter caused Pavi and Nisha to either be suspended in time or travel forward hundreds of years.
It's also possible that Korra didn't actually die during the Cataclysm and managed to survive until 10 years before Seven Havens. After all, the play never said that Korra died, only that she was defeated and was ousted as the "leader" of humanity. While 200 years is an incredibly long time for Korra to survive, there's a chance she could have retreated to the Spirit World during the Cataclysm. It's not clear how exactly it would work, but Seven Havens could say that the Spirit World drastically extended Korra's life, thereby explaining Nisha and Pavi's ages in relation to the date of the Cataclysm.

The next, even less likely explanation, is that Nisha and Pavi aren't Korra's direct successors. Given the hatred the residents of the Havens have for the Avatar, it's possible that one or more unknown Avatars were born when Korra died and lived their entire lives in hiding. Pavi and Nisha would then be the third, fourth, or fifth Avatars in the cycle of rebirth that Korra restarted, not the second.
Unfortunately, Seven Havens hasn't been around long enough to come to a definitive conclusion about its timeline yet. There are simply too many unknowns at this point, with only three episodes released so far. Pavi and Nisha's backstory is still a mystery, and most of what the show has revealed about Korra so far is conjecture and legend spoken by characters who never knew her. Until Avatar: Seven Havens can continue, Korra's fate and legacy will remain shrouded in mystery.
