AirNav, Telkom University partner on AI, aviation cybersecurity

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian air navigation agency AirNav Indonesia and Telkom University have expanded their partnership to develop artificial intelligence and cybersecurity solutions aimed at enhancing flight safety and operational efficiency.

"In aviation, safety is the top priority," AirNav Technical Director Zainal Arifin Harahap said in a statement on Friday.

"Over time, safety must also go hand in hand with efficiency and sustainability."

Harahap emphasized that while AI tools streamline workflows, key safety decisions will remain strictly under human control.

The collaboration builds on a 2024 information technology memorandum of understanding covering joint laboratory optimization, joint research and development, technology deployment, and knowledge sharing.

Key outcomes of the initiative include a prototype Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) AI Generator—initiated in 2024 and launched in 2025—which reduces document creation time to about one minute prior to human verification.

The partners are also building an automated shift-scheduling system for air traffic controllers (ATCs).

Under Indonesian aviation regulations, controllers cannot work continuously for more than two hours and must receive at least 15 hours of rest between shifts.

AI scheduling aims to manage these complex constraints more efficiently than manual processes.

Fauzan Adziman, director general of research and development at Indonesia's Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, praised the industrial-academic collaboration.

"The key is, if we do not know what will be solved, do not do research," Adziman said. "At first, AirNav dared to take a risk because it involved a campus, but the benefit afterward is very high."
