Indonesia urges APEC solidarity to bolster regional resilience

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir has called on Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member economies to forge closer and more unified cooperation to reinforce regional resilience and supply chain connectivity amid mounting global economic uncertainties.
Nasir made the statement during the virtual 37th APEC Ministerial Meeting (AMM), held under the theme “Building an Asia-Pacific Community to Prosper Together” on Tuesday (November 3).
“Confronting current global uncertainties, APEC must remain steadfast in collaborating to build resilience and connectivity across the Asia-Pacific,” Nasir said in a statement released here on Wednesday.
He stressed that bolstering national resilience — particularly in food and energy security, underpinned by human capital development — remains a top priority for Indonesia. Strong domestic fundamentals, he noted, serve as the bedrock for wider regional and global stability.
“In an increasingly interconnected global economy, strengthening national resilience demands inclusive and sustainable cooperation,” he said.
Addressing the region's digital transformation, Nasir highlighted the need for APEC economies to expand connectivity beyond traditional physical infrastructure.
“Artificial intelligence (AI) can facilitate the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and opportunities across the region,” he remarked, urging member economies to scale up investments in digital workforce upskilling.
He underscored that AI technologies must be deployed safely, responsibly, and in a human-centric manner to accelerate regional growth.
On international trade, Indonesia reaffirmed that regional prosperity hinges on preserving a rules-based and non-discriminatory multilateral trading system, with the World Trade Organization (WTO) at its core.
Nasir urged APEC members to push for constructive and inclusive reforms within the WTO to ensure international trade delivers more tangible benefits for all economies.
He added that APEC must retain its status as the premier forum and primary catalyst for Asia-Pacific economic cooperation.
"APEC must serve as an incubator of ideas that generates tangible and impactful outcomes for our people,” he asserted.
The 37th AMM was hosted virtually by China to finalize key deliverables ahead of the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting, scheduled to take place in Shenzhen, China, on November 18-19, 2026.
The ministerial session was attended by representatives from all 21 APEC member economies and three official observer organizations. A founding member of APEC since its establishment in 1989, Indonesia continues to champion balanced development and economic integration across the Pacific Rim.
