Russell Crowe’s 101-Minute Thriller Gets Streaming Redemption After Failed $781K Release

For many, Russell Crowe remains best known for starring in Ridley Scott's Gladiator (2000), but the New Zealand-born actor has kept busy in the years since, putting many more films on his resume. Though he is less often starring as an action hero these days, Crowe continues to take on interesting roles, recently appearing in titles like The Pope's Exorcist (2023), Land of Bad (2024), and Nuremberg (2025). The Pope's Exorcist and Nuremberg both found success in theaters, but not all of Crowe's movies are instant hits.

After failing to generate much buzz in theaters, Crowe's 2026 thriller, The Get Out, is now finding success on streaming. As of writing, the film ranks as the number one movie on Paramount+ in the U.S., beating titles like Scary Movie (2026), Passenger (2026), Homestead (2024), and Joe Dirt (2001).

The Get Out only just launched on Paramount+, quickly climbing to the number one spot. In addition to beating the other top four outlined above, the film also bests Fist Fight (2017), Driver's Ed (2026), Scary Movie (2000), The Hangover (2009), and 300 (2006). Directed by Derrick Borte, The Get Out hit theaters on June 26 and released on digital platforms days later on June 30.

Marking the second collaboration between Borte and Crowe after 2020's Unhinged, which saw Crowe playing a road-raging killer, The Get Out features the actor playing a very different character in the form of nightclub owner Manco Kapak. Also starring Luke Evans, Teresa Palmer, Aaron Paul, Daniel Zovatto, and Nina Dobrev, the film follows Kapak as he attempts to retire, but a robbery, a ruthless cartel, and a mysterious newcomer interested in buying his business complicate things.

The Movie Had The Quietest Of Releases

In its theatrical run, The Get Out grossed just $781,000 worldwide. It's not clear what the film's budget was, but it almost certainly didn't break even. Still, this isn't a surprising result, given the Vertical-distributed movie only had a very limited release in select theaters. It was on home viewing platforms that this movie was always going to thrive.

Unlike some other recent Crowe titles, like the well-received Nuremberg, The Get Out reviews have been mixed from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has only a 45% score, with the Popcornmeter not much higher at 52%. Still, the film is evidently now finding an audience on Paramount+, speaking to Crowe's continued appeal as a movie star.
