Polo player dies after accident at tournament

A popular polo player has died after an accident during a tournament in West Sussex.

Harry Revell, 32, suffered serious injuries while playing a match at Cowdray Estate near Petworth last Friday.

He was taken to hospital by Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex, but later died.

Cowdray Park Polo Club, which paid tribute to Mr Revell, said the Farewell Cup had been abandoned as a mark of respect.

Club officials said they were enormously grateful to the paramedics, the air ambulance and everyone involved in Mr Revell’s care.

A club statement said he was a much-loved and respected member of the polo community, adding: “The club has remained in close contact with Harry’s family since the accident and will continue to offer whatever support we can.

“Harry’s family take some comfort in knowing that he was unconscious immediately following the accident, and he remained peaceful and in the very best care until he passed.”

Mr Revell and his wife, Lily, married in September 2023, according to an Instagram post celebrating their first anniversary.

Tributes were posted on social media, including one from the Three Moles pub in Petworth, where managers wrote: “Harry wasn’t just a friend to us — he was one of those very special people who became part of your life and left a mark that will never be forgotten.

“So many of our customers will know Harry too… He had an incredible personality and an infectious energy that made it impossible not to smile when he was around.”

Hurlingham Polo Association wrote: “Harry was a much-loved and respected member of the polo community, and our thoughts are first and foremost with his wife, family, friends, and teammates at this desperately difficult time.”

Auckland Polo Club in New Zealand said Revell had been a "much-loved member" for many years when he would travel to play during the country's polo season.

"An absolute perfect gentlemen, he was an asset to every polo team, sideline, dinner table or polo party," the club said.
