Famous South African hotel named among the world’s 50 best for 2026
South Africa has made its mark on the global luxury travel scene, with one of Cape Town’s most recognisable hotels named among the 50 best hotels in the world for 2026.
Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, took the 34th spot in this year’s #legend ranking, which was unveiled in Paris on 15 September.
The Cape Town landmark was the only South African property to feature in the top 50.
The list covers hotels across 22 destinations and six continents, with Rosewood Hong Kong taking the number one position for a second consecutive year. Asia dominated the ranking, accounting for 18 of the 50 hotels.
But for South Africa, the standout is the famous pink hotel beneath Table Mountain.
Inside Cape Town’s iconic Mount Nelson
Known affectionately as the Pink Lady, Mount Nelson has been part of Cape Town’s hotel scene since 1899.
The hotel sits beneath Table Mountain on nine acres of gardens and has 196 rooms and suites. Its distinctive pink colour was introduced in 1918 and has since become one of the hotel’s defining features.
Today, Mount Nelson combines its historic setting with contemporary luxury, offering several restaurants and bars, a spa, swimming pools and its famous afternoon tea.
Its dining line-up includes Amura by Ángel León, The Red Room by Chefs Warehouse, The Verandah and Planet Bar, among others.
The hotel also places a strong emphasis on South African art, design and local culture, giving guests experiences that extend beyond its accommodation.
What does it cost to stay?
A stay at Mount Nelson comes with a luxury-hotel price tag, although the exact rate depends on the room, dates and season.
The hotel currently offers everything from standard rooms at around R20 000 per night to large signature suites at around R47 000-R80 000 per night. (Prices correct at time of publishing)
For South African travellers, the hotel also has a South African Residents Promotion, which includes accommodation and daily breakfast, although rates vary according to availability and booking dates.
For those wanting a taste of the Mount Nelson experience without booking a room, the hotel also offers its famous afternoon tea, which costs R650 per adult and R350 per child under 12, while a pool cabana costs R6 000 per day for resident guests.
Mount Nelson joins the world’s best
The 2026 list placed Mount Nelson at number 34, putting the Cape Town hotel alongside some of the world’s best-known luxury properties.
The top five were:
- Rosewood Hong Kong – Hong Kong
- Capella Bangkok – Bangkok
- Four Seasons Bangkok at Chao Phraya River – Bangkok
- Atlantis The Royal – Dubai
- Passalacqua – Lake Como
Other notable hotels in the top 50 included Claridge’s in London, Hôtel de Crillon in Paris, Raffles Singapore, The Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai and The Peninsula Hong Kong.
