Former Bachelor star Sam Wood to appeal bail decision

Former reality TV star and fitness influencer Sam Wood has filed an appeal to the decision denying his bail.

Wood, 46, has been held on remand since his arrest on October 3, when police alleged he had strangled and assaulted his wife Snezana while on holiday in Noosa, on the Sunshine Coast.

The former Bachelor star was denied bail by a magistrate days later, and transferred to a prison in Brisbane.

He was denied bail again last Friday, this time in the Supreme Court.

In his ruling, Justice Patrick McCafferty said Wood had had several drinks at dinner, before an argument about Snezana wanting to pack their bags broke out.

McCafferty said Wood had allegedly become angry.

“An argument commenced, not with [Snezana] but the other person [daughter Eve Markoski Wood] who was a witness to the events,” he said.

“That is said to have, according to the witness, to involve ... saying she and the witness can ‘both die, I’m going to send you back to your family’.”

Wood allegedly came at Eve, before Snezana intervened.

The couple went back to their room, and Eve alleged she could hear her mother’s voice become muffled and described hearing gasping.

Snezana alleges her husband grabbed her by the throat, and she was unable to breathe.

“[Snezana] ended up on the floor. The applicant was still holding her throat, and the complainant alleges was choking her,” McCafferty said.

Wood’s lawyers appealed McCafferty’s decision to deny bail on Monday.

They will argue not enough consideration was given to how long Wood could spend in prison before his trial, that the decision was unreasonable or unjust, and that McCafferty failed consider if proposed bail conditions would reduce the risk of reoffending, and failed to give reasons for why they would not.

The appeal could be held as soon as Friday, November 6.
