PAS welcomes Najib house arrest, says he still has plenty to offer

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 18 — PAS today thanked His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, for granting former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak a conditional pardon, saying he could still contribute his ideas and experience to the country.

PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the party was grateful for the King’s decision allowing Najib to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028, subject to the payment of a RM50 million fine.

“This development is deeply meaningful not only to Datuk Seri Najib’s family, but also to Malaysians who continue to remember and appreciate his contributions and service as a leader who brought development to the country and prosperity to the people,” he said in a statement today.

PAS also prayed that Najib would remain in good health while serving the remainder of his sentence at home.

“We believe he can still contribute his ideas, views and experience for the good of the country,” Takiyuddin said.

The Prime Minister’s Department’s Legal Affairs Division said earlier today that the conditional pardon was decided at the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya at Istana Negara.

Najib must comply with the conditions imposed, failing which the conditional pardon will be revoked and he will have to immediately serve the remainder of his sentence in prison.

Najib, 73, has been serving his sentence at Kajang Prison since August 23, 2022, following his conviction in the SRC International case involving RM42 million. His original 12-year jail term was reduced to six years in 2024, while his RM210 million fine was cut to RM50 million.
