'Ranabaali' trailer out: Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna’s period drama tells the story of a British-made famine; makers say, 'A story that deserves to be told right'

The trailer of ‘Ranabaali’, starring Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna, was released on Thursday evening. Directed by Rahul Sankrityan, the 3-minute-56-second glimpse follows a village struggling through a famine caused by British rule in South India, with Arnold Vosloo playing the villain.

What the ‘Ranabaali’ trailer shows

The video begins with a folk performance honouring the legacy of Ranabaali of Singanamala Hill. A folktale says a woman gave birth to him in a cave, and it is soon predicted that greatness awaits him. His village is told to work for the British in return for wages, but the people are mistreated instead.Amid this, Ranabaali questions why the British hold any control over the village at all. He is married to Jayamma, whose mother-in-law wants her to give an heir soon.

Happy moments are rare, as a famine hangs over the village, and Ranabaali decides to save his people. The trailer ends with a tease of a ‘Kantara’, ‘Pushpa’ and ‘Karuppu’ style moment for Vijay.

Makers’ note

While sharing the trailer, the makers wrote, “Stories preserved through generations, living on in folklore. Now, we bring them to the BIGGEST SCREENS across THE WORLD. The history that shaped us. The Indian men we descend from.

A story that deserves to be told right. This October 16th - RANABAALI.”
