Husband's tragic final act as he 'was electrocuted trying to save wife from hot tub' at Spanish villa

The horrific details of how a couple died in a hot tub while holidaying in Spain have emerged following weeks of speculation surrounding the tragedy.

Patrick and Thomasina Tobin were staying at luxury holiday rental Villa Luna when their bodies were discovered by their two teenage children, a 14-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, after the couple took a dip in the hot tub.

Preliminary post-mortem reports indicated that the pair suffered cardiopulmonary arrests, while Spanish authorities quickly ruled out foul play.

Theories included a possible malfunction in the hot tub's filtration system, electrocution, overheating and a potential chemical malfunction, after detectives reportedly noted a “strong chemical smell” at the scene.

The couple's children, who have special needs, are now being cared for by relatives in Greenwich, south London, as the family continues to seek answers over what happened.

Now, weeks after the incident, the family may be closer to understanding the circumstances surrounding the couple's deaths, with electrocution believed to be the most likely cause, according to the Daily Mail.

It has also been suggested that Thomasina, who grew up in Co Monaghan, Ireland, may have got into difficulty in the water before her husband of 20 years attempted to rescue her, tragically resulting in both of their deaths.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, a friend of the couple said there had been “total confusion” over how such a tragedy could have occurred — and that, to some extent, questions still remain.

“The police said it was some sort of [hot tub] accident, but we could not figure out how this could have happened and taken both of their lives,” they said.

“I understand now that the coroner’s report puts the cause of death down to electrocution and that one of them was found in the [hot tub] and one of them was next to it.

“The assumption is that Paddy was trying to drag Thomasina out. She was really small, but he was still wet and was then electrocuted himself.”

The family is still seeking answers over the circumstances surrounding the couple's deaths, including whether anyone could ultimately be held responsible for the tragedy.

While the source admitted the family still does not have a clear picture of exactly what happened, they said electrocution appeared “more plausible” than a problem involving the hot tub's suction system.

As the holiday season draws to a close, the three-storey villa the Tobins had booked for their summer break remains closed.

Patrick and Thomasina Tobin had built a vibrant life together in London before their lives were cut tragically short on August 24.

They have been described as highly accomplished professionals and dedicated members of their community whose sudden passing has left an "immeasurable void" for their loved ones.

In a notice shared on Ireland’s death notices platform RIP.ie, the “sudden and tragic passing” of Patrick and Thomasina Tobin was announced with “profound sadness” by the couple’s friends and family.

The notice reads: “Thomasina and Paddy shared a life filled with love, family and friendship. Their sudden passing has left an immeasurable void in the lives of all who knew and loved them.”

Thomasina came from a large family in Ireland and was raised in Cabra, Castleblayney. A chartered quantity surveyor, she built a 30-year career in the UK construction industry and was a director and head of hotels at Turner & Townsend Alinea.
