The National Open University of Nigeria has appointed Ramatu Ibrahim as Acting Bursar following the killing of the university’s Bursar, Nasir Marafa.

The appointment comes during the three-day mourning period declared by the university for Marafa, which commenced on Monday and will end on Wednesday.

Marafa was reportedly shot dead in Zamfara State, with the university Registrar, Oladipo Ajayi, announcing his death on Sunday.

Ibrahim’s appointment was announced by the Registrar in a public notice posted on the university’s Facebook page on Tuesday evening.

According to Ajayi, the appointment, which takes effect immediately, was aimed at “ensuring continuity, stability and effective leadership in the university’s financial administration at a critical period.”

Ibrahim, who was the Deputy Bursar, Treasury, before her appointment, was described by the university as “an experienced university administrator with extensive knowledge of the university’s financial operations.”

The statement indicated that Ibrahim had served in various major operational units of the Bursary Department, gaining experience in accounting, financial management, treasury operations and related administrative processes.

It added, “In her immediate past role as Deputy Bursar, Treasury, Ibrahim provided professional leadership and oversight of the University’s treasury operations.”

The university added that Ibrahim’s experience across the Bursary Department, coupled with her knowledge of NOUN’s financial systems and institutional processes, positioned her to provide effective leadership and sustain efficient, transparent and accountable financial services.

The university management expressed confidence in her ability to discharge the responsibilities of her new office with “professionalism, diligence, integrity and a strong sense of institutional responsibility.”

According to the statement, Ibrahim’s appointment was approved by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Uduma Oji Uduma, with the concurrence of the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Isa Yuguda.

The university also mourned Marafa, describing him as “a dedicated and dependable officer who served the institution with commitment, professionalism and integrity.”

It said his contributions to the financial administration and institutional development of NOUN would be remembered “with gratitude and appreciation.”
