Prabowo emphasizes Giant Sea Wall project to safeguard Java's coast

Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto has reaffirmed the critical need to build a Giant Sea Wall along Java’s North Coast to protect coastal populations and national economic activities from growing environmental threats.

Speaking on the broadcast program Presiden Prabowo Menjawab (President Prabowo Answers) in Jakarta on Wednesday, Prabowo highlighted that Java's North Coast hosts a heavy concentration of industrial hubs, making dedicated coastal protection infrastructure essential.

"It is vital because a vast number of our industries are located on Java's North Coast. So, we need coastal embankments, sea walls, and breakwaters," President Prabowo said.

The planned Giant Sea Wall—stretching approximately 575 kilometers from Tangerang in Banten to East Java—is designed to protect roughly 50 million people while safeguarding regions that generate 38 percent of Indonesia's gross domestic product (GDP).

Furthermore, the northern coastal corridor hosts 70 industrial estates and five economic zones that serve as a crucial backbone for the national logistics network. The mega-project will be divided into 15 construction segments.

Prabowo stated that construction is targeted to begin in early 2027, adding that several potential investors have already expressed interest in financing the megaproject.

"There are already interested parties and those willing to provide funding. So, this is one of the strategic projects we must carry out," he revealed.

However, the president noted that the project represents a multi-decade commitment, with timelines varying across different regions.

"This program will not be completed quickly. We estimate it might take eight years for Jakarta alone. Semarang might be faster," Prabowo explained.

He estimated that while full completion of the Giant Sea Wall could take up to 20 years, accelerated execution could potentially condense the timeframe to between 10 and 15 years.
