RoS deregisters PN

The Registrar of Societies (RoS) has deregistered Perikatan Nasional (PN), saying the coalition’s response to a show-cause notice failed to justify retaining its registration.
In a statement today, the RoS said PN was issued a show-cause notice dated Sept 22 to submit an explanation and representations on the matters raised. The registrar received PN’s reply on Oct 12.
“After studying all the documents and explanations submitted, the RoS found that the reasons given could not rebut the grounds for deregistration, and did not provide strong justification for maintaining the society’s registration,” it said.
The statement did not say what the grounds were or what PN had argued.
The RoS said every registered society is responsible for ensuring compliance with the provisions of the Societies Act 1966 and its own constitution.
“The registrar will continue to carry out its regulatory and enforcement functions firmly, fairly and in accordance with the law,” it added.
The deregistration came despite the High Court granting PN leave to commence judicial review proceedings against the RoS over its notice suspending the coalition’s activities and the show-cause notice requiring it to explain why action should not be taken to deregister it.
It also sought a declaration that both notices were null and void and of no effect.
The RoS suspended PN on Sept 23 following a notice issued to the coalition seeking an explanation over a complaint lodged by Bersatu.
Bersatu alleged that it was excluded from a key PN Supreme Council meeting on July 16, and raised questions about its membership in the coalition.
