Philomena Cunk first-look unveiled by BBC for "most glamorous" series to date

The BBC has given fans a glimpse at Diane Morgan’s return as Philomena Cunk for a brand new series.

The beloved documentary-maker, who was first portrayed by comedian Morgan in Charlie Brooker’s Weekly Wipe back in 2013 before returning in acclaimed shows including Cunk on Britain and Cunk on Life, will soon be back on our screens in Cunk on Cinema.

The new series will see the ill-informed interviewer examine the world’s love affair with movies, and be her “most glamorous series to date”, according to the BBC.

The synopsis also teases that the new series will “chart the history of cinema”, with Cunk tracing the invention of the camera, to the New Wave filmmakers of the '60s, right up to the entrance of CGI, as well as exploring what the future of AI could mean.

The documentary-maker will “attempt to demystify it all while sitting in lumpy seats with stale popcorn, asking herself where did cinema come from? And why? What does it want? And why can’t it tell us?”

Cunk will be joined by a star-studded line-up from across the industry in the new series, including Michael Bay (director, Transformers), Benedict Cumberbatch (actor, Sherlock), Daniel Pemberton (composer, Project Hail Mary), Steven E de Souza (screenwriter, Die Hard) and Seamus McGarvey (cinematographer, Avengers Assemble).

Other big names set to appear include Mark Kermode (critic), Mark Cousins (film maker), Isabel Stevens (managing editor of Sight and Sound magazine), Helen O’Hara (editor at large at Empire Magazine), Catherine Bray (critic at Screen International) and Bryony Dixon (curator of silent film, BFI).

The series, which is executive produced by Brooker, Morgan and Sam Ward, is coming soon to BBC Two and BBC iPlayer. It will debut on BBC iPlayer and BBC Two and on Netflix outside of the UK and Ireland.
