There, he built lasting industry connections and optioned a feature film screenplay.
Supermax production has wrapped.
The film features David Gordon Green in the director's chair, with Will Smith starring as an FBI agent investigating a murder in the world's most secure maximum security prison. Filming on the movie, which also stars AnnaSophia Robb, Jason Clarke, Jaafar Jackson, and Melissa Leo, got underway in August in New South Wales, Australia, with a release scheduled for October 15, 2027.
Per a new post on Instagram from Ariana Whittingham, who worked on the production, Supermax wrapped filming on October 10. Whittingham, who describes herself as a "Creative Director" in her Instagram bio, shares a number of printed photos seemingly from the movie's wrap party, including several with a smiling Smith.
For Smith, Supermax marks his first feature film since Bad Boys: Ride or Die in 2024, which itself came two years after Emancipation in 2022. Smith did grace screens in 2025, however, appearing briefly in one episode of Bel-Air, and again in 2026 with Pole to Pole with Will Smith.
The latest Bad Boys film was a box office hit, grossing $400 million worldwide, meaning Supermax has a high bar to clear. Amazon MGM Studios acquired the movie from Miramax for $70 million, suggesting strong confidence in the project, but Supermax is not set to play in theaters. Instead, the film will debut directly on Prime Video.
Despite Ride or Die's success, Bad Boys 5 has not yet been officially given the green light.
Featuring a script by David Weil and David J. Rosen, Supermax comes on the heels of several disappointing releases for Green. Green made a splash in the world of horror in 2018 with his well-received Halloween reboot, but 2021's Halloween Kills and 2022's Halloween Ends were far more divisive critically, though both were box office successes. Green followed his Halloween trilogy up with The Exorcist: Believer (2023), a notorious flop, and Nutcrackers (2024), a poorly received Christmas movie starring Ben Stiller.
Supermax, then, could mark redemption for Green, who also works extensively in the world of TV. The filmmaker has directed episodes of Eastbound & Down, Vice Principals, The Righteous Gemstones, Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, and The Hawk. His previous film work includes Pineapple Express (2008), Your Highness (2011), and Joe (2013).
Much remains unknown about Supermax, but with a release date set for next October, it seems likely that the marketing campaign for the movie won't get underway until next year. As an original idea, the film will serve as an interesting test for Smith regarding his power as a movie star and his ability to open a non-franchise title.
