Avengers: Endgame Encore Post-Credit Scene: Is Robert Downey Jr.’s Dr. Doom Following Tony Stark’s Story?

Avengers: Endgame Encore has hyped up Marvel Cinematic Universe fans, with the re-release adding new footage and three post-credit scenes that set up several storylines for Avengers: Doomsday. The excitement escalated toward the end of the film, with the new scenes offering clues about what could be coming next. 

For those unversed, the last post-credit scene draws a striking parallel between Robert Downey Jr.’s Dr. Doom and Tony Stark. While in the original Endgame, the audience heard the sound of a hammer and the anvil, which felt like a tribute to Iron Man. Endgame Encore changes the context of that sound, showing Doctor Doom forging his mask instead. Could this hint at an origin story that mirrors Tony Stark’s? Let’s take a closer look. 

Why Robert Downey Jr.’s Dr. Doom Could Mirror Tony Stark’s Origin? 

The final post-credit scene in Avengers: Endgame Encore begins with the hammer and anvil sound. However, in the final three hits, we see a bit of similar footage from Iron Man 2008. The first hit shows a metal being hammered, the second shows a mask being shaped from the flames, and the third shows the mask of Dr. Doom.

For those unversed, Dr. Victor von Doom and Tony Stark share many similarities. They are both wealthy, highly intelligent characters with powerful empires and a strong interest in science and technology.

This has led to a theory that the MCU could give Doom a backstory that deliberately mirrors Tony Stark’s. It is possible that this version of Victor von Doom comes from a universe where Tony Stark never existed, and Doom instead fills a similar role.

The theory suggests that Doom could be captured by terrorists and left stranded in a cave, much like Tony Stark was in Iron Man. However, instead of using technology to build an armored suit, Victor could turn to magic and other abilities associated with Doctor Doom.

Now, it is clear that his mask is not necessarily meant to grant him powers in the same way Iron Man’s armor did. However, it should be noted that Doctor Doom traditionally wears a metal mask to conceal his disfigured face. In the MCU, the mask could similarly become an important part of his identity. 

As for how his face got ruined, it might have happened during the battle or the attack on his empire that also took away his mother. Another potential similarity is that, just like Tony Stark’s parents, Doom’s mother could also have an important role in shaping his story. 

As seen in the trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, a huge mural showcases a young boy being close to his seemingly mother. This is also the time when Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm suggests, “I knew he was lost, but I did not realize that he was broken.” 

If the theory plays out, this could help shape Doom’s revenge-driven arc. It is important to note that the Endgame Encore scene does not confirm that Doctor Doom is a Tony Stark variant or that the two characters literally share the same origin. Instead, the scene creates a deliberate visual connection between them: Tony Stark built his first Iron Man armor in a cave, while Doom is now shown forging his own mask. 

Why Is Dr. Doom After The Avengers? 

In the trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, Dr. Doom is heard stating, “All of you have been living stolen lives.” This is also when all the young characters, including Eternity, Cassie, Franklin, and others, are shown. This suggests that the future we have seen until now was not supposed to happen. 

And that the discussion made by Steve Rogers’ Captain America sent waves of incursion to the world of Doom, meaning Earth 828. His decision might have killed the mother of Doom. Now, the reason why Doom is hunting down the Avengers could be that he wants his old life back, which was taken away by the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes when they time-traveled and changed their future.
