Sales agency The Playmaker Munich has closed distribution deals for the animated movie “The Unicorn That Said No” in several territories, ahead of its market premiere at the American Film Market in Los Angeles.

The feature has been sold to Unlimited Media for the Baltic states, WWE Rights for Benelux, KMBO for France, Grand Entertainment for Motion Pictures for the Middle East, M2 Films for Poland, Idea Film for Romania, Another World Entertainment for Scandinavia, Pack Magic for Spain and Orjinlab for Turkey.

The German distributor is Warner Bros. Film Productions Germany, with a release on Jan. 1, 2027.

“The Unicorn That Said No” is based on the book “Das Neinhorn” by Marc-Uwe Kling and Astrid Henn, which has been translated into more than 25 languages.

The movie centers on a “sweet, grumpy unicorn” who can no longer bear the pink, idyllic world of his unicorn family and sets off for Nowhere. He unexpectedly finds new friends and together they must rescue the king’s daughter from her tower in order to return home with his new gang.

The movie is directed by Kling, Johannes Weiland (“The Gruffalo’s Child”) and Studio Soi, with a screenplay by Kling and Marcus Sauermann.

Kling also lends his voice to the unicorn. The German voice cast also features Nora Tschirner, Torsten Sträter and Karoline Herfurth.

The movie is a production of X Filme Creative Pool (“Run Lola Run,” “Goodbye, Lenin!”) and Studio Soi (“The Gruffalo,” “The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball”), in co-production with Warner Bros. Film Productions Germany. Producers are Uwe Schott, Nicole Kellerhals and Carsten Bunte. Co-producers are Steffen Schier, Margret Mackuth and Julia Hayungs. Music is by Felix Raffel, and the main song is by Dota Kehr.

The movie is supported by MFG, MDM, BKM, FFA and Kuratorium Junger Deutscher Film.

The market premiere will be at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 at AMC Century City in Los Angeles. The Playmaker Munich will be based at the Fairmont Century Plaza, Los Angeles during AFM.

Sylvia Edelmann, head of sales at The Playmaker, said, “It’s wonderful to see so many territories on board before the film has even screened. The book is a hit with readers of all ages around the world, and we can’t wait to bring this sweet, grumpy unicorn to even more audiences at AFM.”
