The release of Red Dead Redemption 2 was such a watershed moment for video games more generally that it remains almost as relevant today as it was then. A big part of that was how the game pushed the boundaries of cinematic storytelling and the world Rockstar built is one that players were more than happy to spend hundreds of hours in.
It is the unfortunately reality, though, that we haven't had any new single-player content beyond the base game, meaning it's not even as well serviced as the original, which at least got one major DLC. If you're willing to stray into the multiplayer, however, there are plenty of things still going on, and October is looking to be a particularly special month for players.
Over on the official Rockstar website, you should be able to find the event breakdown for Halloween, which is running throughout October and into the earliest reaches of November. There's a lot going on, but the headline act is the return of the Dead of Night game mode, which runs as the current Featured Series designed to mark the occasion.
If you haven't experienced it before, it's a little window into what an Undead Nightmare DLC would look like for Red Dead Redemption 2. In it, four teams compete against each other while fighting waves of armed zombie-like NPCs, with points scored for every undead you kill, and every player-enemy you manage to take out.
As with each monthly event, there are also a bunch of bonuses available for completing certain activities while the Halloween modes are active. The full list of those is as follows:
- 3X RDO$, Role XP and XP on Naturalist Sample Sales
- 3X RDO$, Gold and XP on All Hallows' Call to Arms
- 3X RDO$ and XP on Featured Series
- 4X RDO$, Gold and XP on Strange Tales of the West Telegram Missions
There are also other rewards available for very little effort on your part. Those include the Red Fernwater Coat, which you get just for playing the game this month, and the Irontooth Mask, which Naturalists can also earn as a login reward. Lastly, hunting or sampling a Legendary Animal rewards the Best Shot Emote, and reaching wave five in All Hallows' Call to Arms grants access to the Rowberrow Outfit and Air Banjo Emote.
The future of the Red Dead Redemption franchise is bizarrely up in the air, considering how successful it has been for Rockstar. Former studio head Dan Houser has previously claimed that he would like it to remain as just two game, as was originally intended, but given that he is no longer at the company, the chance of us getting a third game at some point have gone up.
